Question about Hayward H Series Pool & Spa Heater 400k Btu Propane Gas Milivolt Ignition H400p1

Hayward H100 gas heater Noise

Just started the spa for the spring and the heater when running is making a loud "cracking" noise. Almost sounds like gears getting stripped off. Its loud enough that it actually shakes the heater each time. I've looked under the blower and nothing there. I thought it might be ice in the tubes but after several days its still there. Its definitely in the tube area or below, not coming from the blower. I can feel it in the pipes each time it "cracks". And only happens with heater running. Any ideas? This heater is only about 8mos. old.

SOURCE: Loud noises, shaking, visible white powder in chlorinator

Stop using the heater immediately. You are boiling the water inside and this can lead to a dangerous situation if a limit switch fails to act in time.

You will likely find the diverter in the inlet side of the heater is broken. You are looking for a stainless steel plate in the water path. If you can move it by hand, it is broke. It is not replaceable and requires a new heat exchanger assembly to repair it.

I would suspect that it is not the valve making the noise. I would bet it is the thermal expansion of the metal that you are hearing. Other than that, I have seen cases where there is a flow control valve, and depending on its operation, when it opens or closes on spring power it will over shoot and make a loud clicking noise as the clutch overshoots. This will usually only be about 2-4 clicks though, and around pool equipment I doubt you would hear much of it. I would bet more on the thermal expansion. Kind of like the clicking noise you will hear after you have parked your car and the engine is cooling down.

When the burners ignite, within one minute it starts making a loud banging noise and then the HS code comes on and it shuts down. the noise continues for about 15 to 30 seconds after the burners shut...

This sounds like a low water flow situation. The heater is telling you that the high limit sensor is curring heater operation. The noises are the heat exchangers boiling the water either due to a blockage in the exchanger , a bad mixing vlve, or most likely poor water flow. This is tough to troubleshoot through a posting like this, but 1st thing is 1st. Check your water flow and make sure it is minimum 50 Gallons per minute.

Heater making popping sounds

Poping is an indication that there is a restiction of the water flow.
Simple answer .... and it does happen , plumbing is in reverse.
other possiblity is restiction in water flow as a result of scale,or defect bypass in front header
Have a gas tech come out and have alook.
