CRT TV has no picture (black) on the top 1/4 of screen, a thin very bright (compressed?) band/line underneath, then the picture is normal below this line. Any ideas what this is? Is this the vertical output ic? Worth getting fixed? May consider upgrade to HDTV instead if the fix will be costly.

Vertical retrace lines is the problem. Thin white lines runs across the entire screen, at about an inch apart to each other. Check its video output supply voltage. Reduce the screen voltage to a little bit down and check. If you still wish to know more about this fault, check this site. Pull up older posts there.
the problem there is a loose connection on the board, you said that you smacked the right side of the tv and it goes normal.there are parts that should be resolder on the board in order to back into normal operation.
there,s some button hiden inside the tc. so ,you need to open it adust the brightness..but ,if your tv is too dark change the resistor value 680K at the CRT board . CRT board is a circuit that attach to the picture tube.
you have a problem with one of the following circuits: video amplifier, ABL (automatic brightness limiting) circuit, crt circuit or in horizontal deflection and high voltage circuits. probably a leaky component that when it get warm it it looses its function or maybe a cold solder. but if u do not know these stuffs better have it check by a qualified service technician.
The vertical circuit is going bad, this is the one in charge of opening the picture up and down, try taping on the side to see if the picture reacts ,if it does your set has a loose conection and the vertical IC will need to be resoldered only but if it does not react the IC will have to be replaced,if you are familiar with tv service this will give you a place to start but if you are not be safe and seek the help of a servicer, please let Us know how it goes.
Is good that you hit it and it reacts, very likely you have loose conections in different places but for the distorted picture you need to check the horizontal driver transformer and flyback after that is corrected you need to check the complete chassis for loose conections.Take your time.Good luck.
You have a vert sweep problem and unless you know how to trouble shoot this cuircit bring it to a pro. I found out mostly in these sets that the vert output IC is bad.. Also sometimes the b+ filter cap off the fly is leaky and made the IC to fail. Another thing is Im surprised to hear you got a pic with the vert failure and a bright line in the pic!! This could be a big problem when the sets fixed so dont run it too long like this. It could burn a line all the way across the screen and you will see a dark faint line in your pic because of this. BE CAREFULL!!
