Re: whole touch pad will not work
If you bring it to the apple store, they will basically replace the phone for you if they determine it defect not associated with getting wet, and the item is still under warranty...they may replace it at no charge.
If it has not gotten wet, you should try to do a total reset via itunes. Connect your phone to your computer. launch items. When phone icon appears, chose the restore option....
The whole phone will be backed up, erased and restored to the original manufactures condition. then it will allow you to add any thing you had back to it from the backup...
This should fix the problem if its just a software issue.
If this doesn't work, bring it to the apple store.
Hope this helps. Let me know how it all turns out.

My phone suffered the same symptoms, i was able to fix it by turning it off and on, waiting for the verizon word to animate, plugging it into a wall charger and I was then able to use the slider bar to unlock my phone, I was unable to select anything else on the phone so i closed it and used the qwerty keyboard to get to my touch settings menu, where i selected calibrate and followed the steps it told me to in order to calibrate my phone, I had to repeat the whole process several times before my phone was back to 100% hopes this helps.
