Question about Dell Dimension 5150 (DIM515MIN) PC Desktop

Noisy fan - ~Dell Dimension 5150 (3 years old)

I have a noisy fan and some processor hungry program which I can't find.
When the processor is on 100% - the fan spins really fast and rattles.
Are these problems connected or two separate issues?
Apart from the processor hogging problem (not continuous) - and the fan noise - the pc is working fine.
There seems to be several programs on the processes part of Task Manager called svchost.exe and one of them seems to be the processor hogger!
Thanks - June

Hi.there are also chances that infections also report as svchost in the task manager.Try loading the system in safemode by pressing the F8 key on the restart and then check whether it still gives the same issue. This mode doesnt allow much of the common infections to run.

Cpu fan speed

1. Check if something like power supply wire have bangin in there.
2. Clean : Try to use lighter fluid to loosen and clean the dirt inside the processor fan but first disassemble the fan from the heat zinc of the processor. flip the fan and you will see the bearing and motor, drown it with fluid, and rotate the fan so the dirt will loose, after some spins, try to spill the fluid inside the fan. then assemble and test.

The fan in my computer is super load!!! i just got it 3 months ago

Win8.1 is very power hungry and increases the fan speed to help keep the processor cool. If the fan is very noisy, contact your supplier for an under warranty replacement fan.

Machine running, fan suddenly speed up too high, so i log out shut down, powerup/shutdown in seconds with flashing red light, continuosly

This has been a problems that is really easy to fix as long as your a bit careful. The problems is the design of the heat sink on the processor, the design flaw makes it possible for dust to collect on the heat sink on the processor allowing the heat to build up very quickly when using the processor a lot which tells the fan to speed up to attempt to cool things off but because of the excess dust it cannot do so.
On the e-machine it is easiest to use compressed air to clear the dust on the heat sink for the processor, however do not have the computer turned on when doing the cleaning, and if your using a air compressor blow gun, you should limit the pressure to 100 lbs or a little less and then be careful not to blow directly on the fan so the fan spins up (by the air flow) too fast because it can damage the fans bearings.
Note: this machine will collect a lot of dust in the heat sink so when blowing it clear it will produce a dust cloud, you may wish to do it in an area where dust will not be a problem for other things, people, or pets.

You will probably need to replace the CPU fan down the road and remove the old thermal grease between the heatsink and the processor ic for new compound, will make all the difference.

I have a DC7100 P4 CPU and its working but the fan seems to be running faster than normal, I already cleaned the inside just to be sure that there is no dust but still its creating loud noise from the fan....

Simple checkup to confirm that: install this free program
and it will tell you the real speed of your fan and the temperature of the processor. If the fan is really fast then most likely cause it the fact that the thermal paste between the processor and the radiator has dried up. Take out the radiator, clean the old paste, and put new one - you can find it in every pc shop.

Should my fan run all the time on desktop dimension

Yes, the computer case fan, and the Power Supply fan should run constantly.

If this is in reference to a Dimension 5150, there is one computer case fan in the front. This fan pushes air through a plastic tuned port, (Shroud), onto the Heatsink, which sits on top of the Processor.

The above link is to Dell Support, and the Service Manual for the Dimension 5150.
Technical Overview shows the inside of the computer.

Processor's have a thermal limit. Once they exceed this thermal limit, or temperature, the Processor turns off. (BIOS turns it off)
This is a Fail safe feature built-in to keep the Processor from burning up.

Desktop computer fans run all the time, unlike laptops.
However the fans should not run at full speed all the time.

If your desktop computer fan sounds like a 'jet engine' constantly, there may be internal hardware problems, for one.

1) It may be that the thermal paste has dried up.

The top of a Processor's case, and the bottom of a Heatsink are not perfectly smooth.
There are 'Pits, Hills, and Valleys'.

The above mentioned imperfections cause a void. This void is an air pocket.
Air is an Insulator, not a Conductor.

Thermal paste fills these voids, and is an excellent conductor of heat. Transfers the heat from the top of the Processor's case, to the bottom of the Heatsink.

Example of a typical Heatsink/Fan combo,

The Heatsink is the finned aluminum looking object under the fan.
(The Dimension 5150 does not use this kind of Heatsink/Fan setup. I included the link to show a typical Heatsink. The front computer case fan, pushes air through a plastic shroud which encases the Heatsink, in a Dimension 5150)

Solution is to Thoroughly clean the top of the Processor's case, and the bottom of the Heatsink, and correctly apply fresh, new thermal paste. (Average cost of thermal paste for this application is $6)

Observe Anti-Static Precautions!]

2) If the inside of the computer is dirty, as well as the inside of the Power Supply, this will also cause the cooling fan/s to race at high speed.

Solution is to use a can, or two of compressed air for computers, and clean the inside of the computer, (Especially the fins on the Heatsink), and the inside of the Power Supply.

[Again, observe Anti-Static Precautions]

Dell dimension 5150 the fan is really noisy and sounds like its going full blast all the time.we can hardly hear the telly over it.

Your fan is most likely in need of a cleaning, or straight out replacement. You can remove the retaining screws and pull the fan out as a complete unit and blow it out with a can of compressed air. If the noise is a high squealing sound, then I would purchase a replacement fan and install it. Fans can be purchased from Ebay, just remember to check and make sure that you are ordering the correct fan (case or heatsink) before you commit to buy.

If the noise is troubling you can see about ordering a replacement for it. Thats the easiest fix. Your other choice is to take it all apart and see whats up in the inside of the fan.
