How to reset BIOS setup password?

Well, I haven't worked on a Compaq for a few years but they're one of the models that respond to having the CMOS battery removed.

Basically, remove battery, find location of CMOS battery (usually under memory cover or HDD cover) and disconnect or pull it out for 30 minutes and you should be back to factory defaults.

My dell inspiron m731r has a black screen asking for a password, what should i do?

the bios, setup is password protected you'll have to find the location of the cmos battery and remove it for about 2 minutes then replace it to clear the password. Unless of course memory serves you.
The problem with that is you'll most likely have to disassemble
the laptop.some batteries can be found by simply removing a bottom cover.

Password hack

While removing the onboard battery and disconnecting all power for 5 minutes may clear the bios, some passwords are written into NvRam (non volitile Ram). This may require you to move some jumpers. Try this.
It may be necessary, on occasion, to clear the CMOS settings. When the CMOS is cleared, all information stored in the CMOS is replaced by default data, which means that all of the configuration information, such as hard drive types and I/O port setup, is cleared, including the password. Use the following procedure to clear CMOS:
  1. Power down the computer.
  2. Remove the left cover of the computer.
  3. Wearing an anti-static wristband grounded to the chassis, remove the jumper from pins 1 - 2 of the Clear CMOS jumper block (JP15) and install it on pins 2 - 3.
  4. Remove the jumper from pins 2 - 3 of the Clear CMOS jumper block (JP15) and install it on pins 1 - 2. (NOTE: Some earlier systems will power up as soon as the jumper is removed from pins 1-2. Later versions of the BIOS change this, 6.00.10 or later.)
  5. Reinstall the cover and power up the computer.
  6. Run the BIOS Setup program to reconfigure the system.

What to do when the monitor screen say''enter password to unlock system?

If it is coming from Windows as it returns from hibernation or the screen saver has gone on with "require password" to access, enter your normal windows password. If it is coming from the password protection set-up in CMOS you need to clear the CMOS with the jumper on the motherboard (see motherboard or computer manual), or if there is no jumper on the motherboard to "Clear CMOS or sometimes BIOS) then carefully pull the motherboard battery (located in a socket on the top of the motherboard (usually a silver 3202 round battery about the size of a quarter) wait 5 minutes for the CMOS to clear, reinsert the battery and then boot normally. You should not see the login and it should go to Windows boot directly.

Got a dell latitude e6400series forgot bios password can i fix this problem ?

Welcome to Fixya

Common procedure in resetting the password is by resetting the motherboard by reseating the CMOS battery. You need to access you motherbard and locate the circular silver metallic object on the motherboard. This is much bigger in size compared to a wristwatch battery. CAREFULLY remove the CMOS battery, avoid touching it with your fingers, and leave it out for about 120 seconds. This will flush the CMOS memory which stores the BIOS password and all other configuration. Put the the battery back in and turn on the computer.

Other procedure is the jumper reset. Some, but not all, motherboard manufacturers provide a set of three jumpers on their motherboards that provide you with the ability to clear the Bios/CMOS settings, thereby allowing them to be reset. For the most part this is used when the Bios/CMOS data becomes scrambled and you need to clear the Bios/CMOS in order to return the computer to a functional state. This same procedure, however, can be used to clear passwords from the Bios/CMOS setup. Typically a jumper will be found across pins #1 and #2 as the default position, and by shutting the computer down, unplugging the power cord and then moving the jumper so that it is across pins #2 and #3 will clear the Bios/CMOS settings.

If procedures above has been done and yet you are getting same results. Its time to call you manufacturer and have the motherboard re-flushed or re-imaged.

Thank you for using Fixya!

I need to reset the bios password on my metrobook ltplus

At his time you need to open the back cover of you laptop to solve the problem. You need to reset the CMOS battery of jamper to clear BIOS password. To open the back cover you need to remove first the laptop battery after that fine and remove some screw.
Once you have already remove the screw and the cover you can see there a small circle CMOS battery you need to remove is to clear all stored password in CMOS memory. You can also see there a jamper near the CMOS battery just remove that and turn on your laptop with in 10 seconds and turn off. Reinsert the jamper with the same position.
Now the CMOS password are already clear just turn on your laptop first before you close the cover.

I have an Acer 5610-2328 notebook. I need to clear CMOS. How?

A CMOS battery usually looks like a coin. It is a silver lithium battery, similar to wrist-watch battery and is usually placed near the BIOS chip.

Some motherboards - especially laptops - have a different kind of battery.
They are simply a capacitor on its own board attached to the motherboard.

So in order to clear the CMOS you need to remove the capacitor and re-solder it to the motherboard, which you don't want to do without some electrician skills.
