Generally speaking if paper is coming out blank you have a cartridge issue. To check if the ink in the cartridge is dried up in the print head take the cartridge out and blot the printhead (on the bottom of the cartridge ) on a paper towel - if there is no solid blob of ink it is dry or empty. You can soak the printhead in 1/4" of warm water in a dish for about 5-10 minutes and try again. If there is still no blob of ink you either need to go to and ink refiller and have them try to revive it or buy a new one and print something every week (2 at most) to keep it from dying out again. This method works for both black and color

If these are new cartridges, make sure you removed all of the protective plastic wrap that comes when packaged.  usually its red , yellow or orange plastic tab that should be removed.
If these are not new cartridges, you may need to try another set.
Try running the head cleaning utility under the printer utilities options HP is very good at having this utility available to trouble shoot most common problems.  If you don't have this utility, try updating your printer driver. (basically uninstall the printer and download the driver from the HP website, and reinstall the printer using the latest driver).
Hope this helps..

Cleaning nozzle cartridge

Regarding your recent inquiry about the HP 74 or HP 75 poor print quality problem your HP OJ5780 printer is currently experiencing, we suggest you perform the following corrective steps to help resolve the issue:

Cartridge & printer maintenance should be evaluated - ensure both ink cartridges and flex cable contact surfaces (where the cartridge interfaces to the carriage inside the printer) are thoroughly clean: http://inkjet411.com/?page_id=1519

1) Gently blot the cartridge Nozzle Plate with a damp lint-free towel/wipe - a small amount of ink should be dispensed, and be visible, on the towel (all 3 colors should be present for a Tri-color cartridge).

2) If no ink is dispersed from nozzle plate (i.e. visible on towel) or ink cartridge completely fails to print on paper after installed in printer, then more drastic cartridge and printer cleaning steps will likely need to be performed to recover ink cartridge (NOTE: foam inside cartridge can dry out and become very hard - the foam must be moist with ink to function correctly (i.e. ink flows and wets the nozzle plate). Refer to 'clogged ink cartridge recovery' video here: http://inkjet411.com/?page_id=2818

Providing the ink cartridges are clean, the problem may be caused by a dirty wiper blade or poor seal in the service station (capping station where the ink cartridges park when not in use) and this is causing the poor jetting / print performance issue you are observing. Remove the ink cartridges and thoroughly clean the wipers and seals: http://inkjet411.com/?page_id=1519

If the issue continues then please refer to 'Troubleshooting' section on our website - the printer manufacturer websites are also provided here: http://inkjet411.com/?page_id=106

Run a quick printer 'self test' (see link below for instructions) or print one of the Inkjet411 test prints to evaluate cartridge performance (i.e. 4-color test print): http://inkjet411.com/?page_id=146

Advanced HP Printer Diagnostics (i.e. printer self tests, etc.): http://inkjet411.com/?page_id=1813

You can also check our 'Print Quality' page of the 'General Information' section of the Inkjet 411 website and follow additional suggestions provided, particularly if the cartridge is not causing the poor image quality problem (i.e. printer driver settings issue): http://inkjet411.com/?page_id=1432

No Printed documents

Have you performed a print head cleaning? If not, follow the instructions below:

1) Press <Menu> on the panel repeatedly until [Maintenance] appears on the display

2) Press left or right arrow buttons until the cleaning setting you want appears, either [Head Cleaning] or [Head Refreshing]

3) Press the <OK> button.

Note: Head cleaning should be attempted first, and may need to be done more than once. Examine the results of the test page.

Head refreshing is more aggressive, uses more ink and should only be performed when necessary (ie. when multiple head cleanings failed to solve your print problem).

HP 640 Fax series not printing

If it is a color printer, try printing just grayscale or black& white.  It is is already set to print just b/w, try printing in color.  Basically you may be out of ink.  Run the printer utility to clean the heads and see if anything changes.  A new set of cartridges should fix the problem, I believe.
Hope this helps...

How can I get the fax and copy to print clearly?

Still sounds like a bad ink cartridge, try cleaning the bottom of the cartridge with a Kleenex and soapy water. Dry it off real good.

Look where the cartridge sits and clean the same way.

Ink jets are dead technology.

replace the black print cartridge. I guess that the text is B&W. Pictures are printed in color - from the color ink cartridge.
