Detecting and repairing disk errors You can use the Error-checking tool to check for file system errors and bad sectors on your hard disk. Open My Computer, and then select the local disk you want to check. On the File menu,Right click>> click Properties. On the Tools tab, under Error-checking, click Check Now. Under Check disk options, select the Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors check box. Notes To open My Computer, click Start, and then click My Computer. All files must be closed for this process to run. If the volume is currently in use, a message box will appear prompting you to indicate whether or not you want to reschedule the disk checking for the next time you restart your system. Then, the next time you restart your system, disk checking will run. Your volume will not be available to perform other tasks while this process is running. If your volume is formatted as NTFS, Windows automatically logs all file transactions, replaces bad clusters, and stores copies of key information for all files on the NTFS volume.

thanks.

Which tools are you using? Does it give any other information such as bad sector on hard disk? You can also check the log to see whether some details are there. If bad sector, you may need to replace the disk or fix the sector by flagging it. But it is safer to replace it because it might be the reader so it will keep breaking the surface of the hard disk.

A disk read error occurred, press ctrl+alt+del is showing when I open my laptop, please help...iTS the same problem even if i press ctrl+alt+del. thanks!

1. It is possible that your hard drive is faulty and have bad sectors or unable to read due to cable error or motherboard.
2. Try to re-seat the hard disk and if that doesn't work go to repair shop and get it checked, if problem is found ask them to recover the data if you need it and if possible.
3. Get a new hard drive.

It is a bad sector error in hard disk which is a major problem.
There are two ways to solve the problem, one is by microprocessor program in command prompt and other is by getting a new hard disk.

My lap top is showing a disk read error occured it says press ctrl+alt+del to reset but even after i do it nothing happened it goeg to the same thing back please help

It appears that the either the boot sector of the hard drive is bad or the hard drive itself is bad. If you created a restore/recovery disk try using the restore disks to restore or recover the hard drive. If you have a bad boot sector, the recovery will happen, if the hard drive is bad then it will say that there is a problem accessing the hard drive or it will say "no hard drive found". Then you need to replace the hard drive with a new one.
There are other methods used to check it but experts with knowledge of MS DOS can do it. Let me know if this helps.

Everytime i turn it on i get a message that one of my disks need to be checked.

This is usually due to the hard drive having what is called "bad sectors" on it. The data on a certain portion of the hard disks readable surface becomes damaged either through age, shock or general wear and tear and it cannot read or write to that area of the disk any more. Bad sectors flag the Disk Checking warning in Windows systems. Try to run a Disk Defragmenter. Bad sectors are flagged by this program. If it picks up any, you will need a new hard drive.

Hope this helps.

Many Bad Sectors fat32, trying recovery disk

Hi,

It sounds like your HDD is faulty, usually a hardrive can operate with bad sectors but still a risk.

My best advice would be to get a new HDD and recover back on to the new one, even if you did manage to recover onto your current one you may still have problems in the future.

I usually only allow a HDD to fail S.M.A.R.T tests 3 times over any given period and then I just replace them.

Thanks

Disk read error occured

If not give it a go and do a repair if needed again!

1- You may have a corrupt MBR (master boot record)!! You will need to reformat and do Fdisk /mbr to delete the master boot record!! Save all data first as this will not allow you to access any of your data as all file location addresses are located in the MBR!!

2 - Your harddrive may have a bad sector get a zerofill tool(low level formatting tool)!! This will rewrite you HD's sectors putting them back to factory spec's!! Maxtors is called Maxblast you can get it from thier site!!

3- or it could be a defective drive, but most read errors are due ot corrupt MBR or a bad sector!!

How do I know that my hard disk has bad sectors?

you can download ubcd, or minipe, and burn them to a cd, if you have another computer, then insert the cd of your choice (minipe is a bit easier), minipe has a start menu similar to the normal windows start menu, somewhere in that menu, there should be a chkdsk, or check disk utility, you would want to run that, and choose yes when it asks if you want to check for bad sectors
