If you have an external hard drive, you can use it to make a back up of your PS3. Just make sure it is in FAT32 format, otherwise it won't read it. From the XMB, go to System settings/Backup Utility, then it will take awhile but it works. I would suggest letting it backup overnight since there is an option to auto shut off after process is done. Hopefully that helps.

How do you reset playstation 3

Hello,

Hard Reset procedure for the PS3 (as instructed by Sony CS). Be sure to backup your settings/games saves by doing a System > Backup on your PS3 or you may lose your game saves! Also, this is a last resort procedure prior to exchanging/returning to sony.

1. Power Off the PS3 via the power switch in back and power back on w/switch.

2. Hold Power Button on the Front until you hear 3 beeps.

3. Then go through the initial setup and then run a full Format via System > Format. (will take approx 3 1/1 hours). You may need to have our AV cables ready if your using HDMI (in case HDMI isn't detected after initial reset).

4. Restore your backup you made prior to doing factory/hard reset (optional, if you created a backup).

I hope this helps

Upgrade wiped out game memory

Hi

Did you take a backup of your game saves or the system backup before upgrading the firmware of your PS3? if not then there is no method to retreive your game saves, however i am listing few steps for you so that you can take a backup in future before you upgrade your PS3

Game saves are of two types, the first ones are those which you can take on any memory stick (cf, ms duo, sd) and there are few saves which cannot be taken on a memory stick due to copyright issues, here you would have to take a full system backup and would require a external Hard Disk to save or a memory stick with a larger capacity.

Steps for Game Save Backups only

1. On the XMB (cross media bar), go to the Game section.
2. Go to Game Saves
3. Put in your memory stick
4. Find the game save you want to copy/backup, highlight it and hit the Triangle button.
5. Choose the menu option to Copy
6. Hit the X button on the memory stick and let it copy.
Steps for System Back up

In the XMB, go to System
Go to Settings > System Settings > Backup Utility
Then choose Back Up
Finally, pick the device to backup too (memory stick, usb harddrive, etc).

While doing a system backup all content of your PS3 including videos, music etc. would be included in the backup, however if you have purchased any copyright material, it would not get restored even if you do a complete system backup

Not reading blu ray disc

First off you will need to back up your ps3 system. To do this, first insert a USB memory stick and then go to System Settings and then Backup, then select the USB memory stick. If the backup gives an error then your have too much information on the PS3 so grab the important things such as save data from the game folder.

You can go to saved data and then go to each saved file and press triangle and select copy. If the save data is grouped in folders then you can press square to ungroup the data and then its easier to copy as you will have to do it one by one. If you have any music files or video that is not saved anywhere else then you may want to back that up too.

After all the data is backed up then go to System Settings and select Restore PS3 System (There is also Restore Default Settings just above it but that didn't work for me.) The PS3 will ask to format the Hard Disk. This means everything will be gone (If the backup worked then you can restore it all later but if it did not then you will have to reconfigure your Playstation the way it was. Select Quick Format. The PS3 will restart after a few seconds and will start up the way it did when you first got it. After Configuring the initial setup, insert a game and check to see if it works. If it does then restore the backup if it worked or restore the game saves and other data, then set up the PS3 with your old settings.

If the game does not work then you are going to have to call sony while beside your PS3 and tell them you tried the Restore PS3 System option, have your Receipt from purchase at hand or else you will not be able to arrange an exchange under warranty.

Good luck.
