You need to configure the modem for it to allow game hosting. Enable NAT/GAMING setting of your modem. You can do so by pulling its interface and configure the settings from there. The interface of the modem can be pulled up by typing the default gateway of the modem in the address bar of a browser.

Hope that helps. Enjoy your game sessions!

Why will it not connect to the internets IP address?

If you reset the modem and ip address will not change and remains same hence it is static ip address. If you reset the modem and the ip address change ,it is dynamic ip address.
You can get the Ip address from your internet service provider.you can check the ip address using the site Ip-details.com .

Need ip address subnet mask number gateway number and dns server number

If the ip address you need is the Internet IP address, this is assigned by you service provider.
If you need an internal ip address, have a look in the modems configuration window.
This window is accessed using internet explorer and typing in the local address of the modem, usually this is 192.168.1.1 so enter this number. If this does not work, go to the modem manufacturers website and in the support section should be the manual (if you dont have one) and in the manual will be the ip address to access the modems configuration pages.
You must undertake these steps with your PC connected to the modem using a network cable, this will not work if you try this using a wireless link.
Usually, the admin and password details are admin admin. So type admin in the name section and admin in the password section.
Once you access the configuration area, navigate to the DHCP area and turn DHCP on.
DHCP stand for Dynamic Host Control Protocol. This simply gives an internal ip address to all the machines connected to the network.
Once this is done, save and reboot the modem and your PC.
Next, click on start and then run and enter CMD into the run dialog box.
When the text window opens, type in : ipconfig /all
dont forget the space between ipconfig and the / symbol
This will give you a list, in this list is the gateway ip address etc.
Usually, the DNS address is assigned automatically by your service provider but if not, you may have to contact them to get this number.
If you are trying to connect a second PC to the modem, all these details will be entered for you as long as you have "Obtain ip addresses automatically" ticked in the properties window of network connections. This is under the network connections applet in control panel. make sure everything is set to automatic.

Got Motorola SB5101u cable modem get ip address and works with xp/pro, but can't get vista computer to get IP address even though have configured for automatic ip / dns. Tried everything I could think of

Obviously make sure its set to automatic IP/dns. If thats not working you need to do this

Click on Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> Right click on command prompt and hit run as administrator.

In Dos prompts type these commands in EXACTLY AS WRITTEN.

netsh i i r r
netsh firewall reset
netsh winsock reset

Also, if you have anti virus like norton or trend micro or mcafee or webroot, you *NEED* to disable their firewalls and possible the entire program.

Some isp's for some reason make it impossible for Vista machines to pull ip addresses dynamically because of a flaw in windows vista. If this continues, i would contact your ISP and request a motorola surfboard 900 series modem, or a cable modem that is in route mode (NOT bridged, as bridged modems will pull a public ip address)

I can't find the settings to enable a public IP for my dns server. Where are they or is there another way?

Telephone your ISP -- they can provide this information.

However, most ISPs use 'DHCP' ("Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol") which automatically provides IP-addresses of DNS-servers to any device (your computer, or your router) connected to the cable-modem.

My modem is unabling me from getting a good online signal for my video game console.

Probably not your modem unless you have a small bandwidth. Make sure your getting 6-8 mbps or you will always be lagging or not getting on at all. Most problems with xbox and others are the settings. Most home internet service is DHCP (dynamic) when acquiring an IP address. Check with your ISP. You also have to reset a modem if you move the ethernet cable from a computer to your game. Modems hate it when you move a cable, they freak out and wont communicate anymore so plug it into you xbox and then unplug, wait 15 seconds and then plug your modem back in.

Ip 3rd time is chainging.all time speed is going down

what ip are you referring to? most internet service providers provide dynamic ip addressing to their residential customers and dynamic ip addressing means that your ip address will be changed periodically. Static ip addresses (ip adoes not change) is usually provided for business consumers.
as for the speed, if you subscribe to 4Mbps speed package, what it actually means is that you willbe getting UP TO 4Mbps speed. that would explain why your speed goes down. you will not always have 4Mbps.

Dynamic IP to Static IP

your dynamic IP is the one that you modem is connected to. The 192.168.*.* is just you local area network addresses.
