Question about Dell Dimension 4550 PC Desktop

1 Answer

I have a Dell Dimension 4550 running windows XP Home. I just recently purchased a new DVD drive(Sony Optiarc AD-7221A) and I can't get it to work. The first drive I tried was a Lite-on DVD burner, and now I have a Sony Optiarc DVD Burner with lite scribe. I used the drive to install Nero 8, but it won't read DVDs. It takes a few minutes for the computer to see the DVD disc, but the computer freezes up, and I have to terminate the process. The other drive I first tried(Lite-on) did the same thing. I have tried updating drivers, and completely re-installing XP. The last time I tried to watch a DVD it gave me a blue screen and said "Page file Error" is there any known way to fix this?? O yeah, I have an old Sony DRU-540 DVD burner drive that works perfectly on this computer, but the door won't come open, hence installing a new drive. I really don't know what else to do!!!

ok, I did this and it didn't help. when I went to reboot, the computer froze on the exit screen and I had to manually turn it off.

Sounds like you have issues with your hard drive.  go to start>run.
type this in without the " "
"cmd", hit ok.  a black screen pops up.  type "cd.." and hit enter.  type in "cd.." and hit enter again.  type "chkdsk c: /f /r".  It will say the drive can not be checked, it is in use.  hit "y" to schedule a check at boot up.  type"exit" and reboot your computer.  let me know if this helps.

ok, this does not work unless you do a proper shutdown and reboot.  If you have to hard kill it, it will not work.

My Sony DVD RW AD-7200A cannot read or write since I purchased it. Another drive works but this second drive does not work. What is the solution?

Hello Dear,

Almost Every Computer Hardware comes with manufacturer warrenty for a limited period. If your DVD drive is not working since you purchased it, You can go to the shop where you purchased it, and get the working one under warrenty.

Thanks

I install new windows and ethernet controller is not working and I can't get on the internet? What can I do?

Purchase a USB memory-stick.
On another computer with Internet access, access: http://support.dell.com and select "Downloads and Drivers". Select "Dimension". Select "4550".
Select "Network Adapters". Download the device-driver, copying it to the memory-stick.
Move the memory-stick to your computer, and "install" the device-driver.

Windows vista updated and now my optiarc dvd rw drive won't work

You will have to uninstall the drive and reinstall again. I think the drivers for the drive is not properly installed. But if all this does not work, then I think you will have to do a system restore.

Best wishes

I just formated my pc.... and then my sony optiarc dvd rw ad- 7200a just couldn't be reconigzed by the system (windows xp sp2, it appears a message saying: "(d:) doesn't match with win32".......... what do...

Try setting the jumper at the back of the drive. if that does not work, then I think the windows is not compatible with the drive or maybe some files were not installed while you were doing the installation. So you have to start the installation all over again.

Best wishes.

My new Sony Optiarc AD-7221A DVD drive won't work

for your old sony drive that wont open...

look fort a small hole, like a little bigger than a pinhole, in the front panel of the drive. if you can find this hole, stick a straightened-out paperclip or something similar in the hole, and gently force it in, and this should open the cd drive.

a page file error has to do with ram saving to and reading from the hard drive, using a portion of the hard drive as back-up virtual ram. perhaps there is a bad sector on the hard drive, or some other sort of error with either the hard drive or ram to cause the "page file error" and the inability to play dvd's.

if you can get that old drive to work, that may be your best bet.
