My new Sony Optiarc AD-7221A DVD drive won't work

I have a Dell Dimension 4550 running windows XP Home. I just recently purchased a new DVD drive(Sony Optiarc AD-7221A) and I can't get it to work. The first drive I tried was a Lite-on DVD burner, and now I have a Sony Optiarc DVD Burner with lite scribe. I used the drive to install Nero 8, but it won't read DVDs. It takes a few minutes for the computer to see the DVD disc, but the computer freezes up, and I have to terminate the process. The other drive I first tried(Lite-on) did the same thing. I have tried updating drivers, and completely re-installing XP. The last time I tried to watch a DVD it gave me a blue screen and said "Page file Error" is there any known way to fix this?? O yeah, I have an old Sony DRU-540 DVD burner drive that works perfectly on this computer, but the door won't come open, hence installing a new drive. I really don't know what else to do!!!

For your old sony drive that wont open...

look fort a small hole, like a little bigger than a pinhole, in the front panel of the drive. if you can find this hole, stick a straightened-out paperclip or something similar in the hole, and gently force it in, and this should open the cd drive.

a page file error has to do with ram saving to and reading from the hard drive, using a portion of the hard drive as back-up virtual ram. perhaps there is a bad sector on the hard drive, or some other sort of error with either the hard drive or ram to cause the "page file error" and the inability to play dvd's.

if you can get that old drive to work, that may be your best bet.

There is no media player within the standard OS. Upgrade to Professional or download drivers and a system to play Video and Audio.

If the drive is faulty, the driver will give error code 32 which means it failed to load.
Check out flea bay for a replacement drive.

Optiarc dvd rw ad-7561a ata device unplugged

Check BIOS for Optical drive. Press F key noted on boot screen to enter. If it's not noted there, you need to check physical connections. Might just need to be re-seated with power disconnected. Re-check BIOS and make sure to save before exiting.

If it is noted in BIOS and Windows still fails to see the drive. Run a thorough virus scan, then boot into Safe Mode by pressing F8 during startup. Go to Device Manager, and select Show Hidden devices under the View tab. Delete all drives and reboot. Windows should say new hardware found and install.

This should take care of the problem if there is nothing wrong with the drive. Replace or seek professional support is not, and good luck

Sony NEC OptiArc can't read but can write!!!

Try to play the cd that you have wrote with other machine if it was able to read with other machine then your dvd is faulty.

If it cannot play with other machine, then there is a problem with the software that you use in cd writing or the dvd rom drive. Try to re-install both drivers, then play a cds.

I have a Gateway M-6824 laptop running Vista Home Prem 32-bit. It has a Sony Optiarc DVD RW AD-6375A ATA Device which has stopped working. Unable to find any drivers for it. Help!!

Hi marjan425,

there is no need for a driver to be installed since this kind of hardware is supported by any version of Windows by default. Please shut down the laptop, remove the entire drive from the laptop (first have a look in your laptop's manual to find out how to do that!), then restart the laptop, wait for Windows to come up, log in to Windows and then insert the drive again. Now Windows should load the drivers for the drive and make it useable for you. In case it doesn't, the drive is defect most likely. In that case please contact your hardware vendor for a replacement.

Good luck and greetings from Germany,
