Re: i accidentally unplugged the first few times without...
Try resetting the iPod by sliding the hold button back and forth once, then holding down the Menu button and Click wheel at the same time. If this doesn't work, go on iTunes and resore your iPod. You will have to re-sync it which might take a while, but i did the same thing and this is what fixed my iPod.

http://beta.fixya.com/support/r10579123-apple_iphone_ipad_ipod_forgotten_pass You are going to need a computer with the latest version of iTunes on it and unfortunately this will fully erase all data on the device Its called Forced Recovery. So with the device plugged into your PC, iTunes open, if it shows up in iTunes eject it, or cancel the prompt to restore a device in recovery mode.
Hold down the Power button for 3 seconds
Without releasing the power button, also hold the Home button for 10 seconds
Without releasing the home button, release the power button and keep holding the Home button for About 20 seconds.
iTunes will detect an iPod/iPhone in recovery mode, let off button and set down device and hit RESTORE in iTunes.
make sure you have the latest version of Itunes on the PC... plug the Ipod to PC..check for IPOD updates... update IPOD if necessary ... you see the MP3 files on itune that are on the ipod? okay eject (always eject never ever by any means just unplug the ipod) the ipod now try to play a song
i have an ipod classic it used to do that now i can just disconnect without ejecting since it has received several software updates previous to that if i unplugged the ipod before ejecting the ipod froze online i learned how to reboot the ipod if it froze
You should not plug the ipod to pc while it is playing because it is switches from the playing mode to sync and charging mode you can not play and use the ipod while it is connected with the software without ejecting it from itunes. Do a reset by pressing and holding the center and menu buttons at the same time until the screen goes back and apple logo pops up. This should reset your ipod and fix the problem.
Go to http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/ this is help for almost of all known issues of ipod. You can also search on top right hand side of website. When you go here, click on the type of ipod nano you have on bottom left of page it will walk you through rest of the process.
Yes, the iPod will show that it is charging on its screen. Disconnecting without ejecting can cause data loss of whatever is stored on the iPod Ejecting is when you remove the iPod from the desktop by dragging its icon to the trash or clicking on the down arrow next to the iPods name from within iTunes.
If you use the library computer, usually a Windows based OS, you'll need to click on the iPod icon from the task tray on the lower right of the screen. You can right click to select the remove option
