Re: hp photosmart 2610xi does not scan.
Remove all hp software and drivers from control panel>add remove programs. Then go to control panel>system and go to hardware and then device manager, then delete your printer/scanner from the list by right clicking and 'uninstall'. Then restart, and make sure you printer/scanner is unplugged and off. Then once your computer restarts go to hp's website and make sure you selected the right country (at the top), then go to support & drivers and download the software/drivers that are for your printer/scanner. Once drivers/software is install, then connect printer (or follow installation instructions, if different)
Also, just to make sure, plug it in a different USB port (after the reinstallation) incase the old drivers are stuck on the computer somewhere. Drivers usually/sometimes are associated with a specific usb port and will reinstall when plugged in a different port.

Hi Good day!!! The way it works for me (different HP all-in-ones, earlier photo smart) is I start Photo Smart, then (once it's loaded), I press the Scan button, and it scans (or brings up a scan menu on the little LCD on the scanner where I tell it to scan).
If this is what you're trying and it doesn't work, you might not have installed the software correctly. The scanner drivers are very picky about when you plug in the scanner to the computer during installation -- if you plug it in before the install program says to do it, the scanner won't work (though the printer will).
The thing to do in this case is (1) unplug the USB cable from the back of the computer, (2) go to control panel->add/remove programs, and remove the scanner drivers, (3) shut down and restart the computer (very important), and (4) put the HP CD into the computer and reinstall the scanner, only connecting the cable to the computer when the program tells you to do it.
First you have to load the scanner (twain driver). Then load the scanning software. Then plug the printer/scanner into the usb port on the pc. The pc should then recognize the scanner. You might have to turn your pc off then on again to recognize the scanner. Then try to open the scanning software on your pc and put the document on the scanning glass and press the aquire/scan button on the software. Hopefully, that should work.
Have you tried updating the drivers from HP's website? I know when I recently upgrade my Internet Explorer it for some reason messed with the software I had installed for the HP Photosmart 2610. I reinstalled the software and uploaded the most recent drivers and eventually got everything to work fine again. So I am wondering if maybe one of the patches/upgrades the Microsoft sends down may have messed with your software as well....Hope that helps.
hey i also had this type of problem. but i solved it and hope it will solve yours too.
first of all uninstall all ur hp drivers and softwares related to the hp printer. then restart your pc. now disconnect ur printer with ur computer and turn it off and again on after 15 secs.
now insert the cd which i have got with the hp printer in the cd-driver of ur pc and install the driver.
after the installation is complete, connect ur printer, but do not remove ur cd.
then start scanning, and if it will again ask for installing driver, u dont have to worry it will install it from the cd.
this would surely help u, if problem persists, please tell me.
If you look in the 96 (Black) cartridge loading area you might see that the retention spring has poked a hole in the circut board. I am now either trying to replace the ink cartridge holder or purchace a new printer. I have about $70.00 in new ink that I can't use now. The 2610xi worked great until the spring popped out of its holder.
