Problems with Maytag 21 cu.ft. Top Mount Refrigerator, MTF2172HR

Purchased new 3 years ago and cooling appears to be functioning normaly. However a noise has recently started (2 to 3 times an hour) that sounds like the ice maker is attempting to start (i.e. buzzing for several seconds followed by an "electronic" sound similar to what I would imagine to be an overload device triping).

6 months ago the refrigerator was moved to a new house that has no water hookup (yet) for the ice maker. To this date the ice maker has been disconnected with the trip lever set in the "ice tray full" position with no problems (other than no ice :>)

The sound at the end of the buzzing is rather ominous and has us concerned about potential electrical fire.

Any ideas? (And thank you in advance).

Thank you for your detailed response. What I failed to clarify in my initial post is that the buzzing/tripping sound will occur both when the compressor is not running AND at times when it is already running. (In the latter case it doesn't seem to change the sound of the compressor/cooling cycle at all). If I put the ice maker activation arm into the "make ice" position the same buzzing/triping noise will occur repeatedly with a several minute delay in between occurances. That is why I thought the noise was the result of the ice maker attempting to operate even though the ice maker is not hooked up to a water source. For some reason (it appears) the ice maker is attempting to activate even with switch off and no water available.

Not nessecarily an electrical fire, but sounds as if the compressor is struggling to start, it is indeed "tripping off" on overload. so yo may start ot see a decline in refrigeration. check your manual for "sealed system" coverage. adn check that against our date of purchase, you should have 5 yr manufactuere warr, but that all changed Jan '06 coverage was reduced to one year! yo ucan try replacing teh overlaod relay, atached ot the side of the compressor if youd like

ok that is quite possible as well, if youllook closesly at the ice maker, its only held in by 2 screws ontop of ice cavity, and 1 below the unit, you can simply unscrew and unplug the unit stopping the noise and adding to the usable space in your freezer, you can always reinstall when your ready for it

There is a awful smell coming from what seems to be underneath my fridge. There is a plastic tray underneath but I don't seem to be able to pull it out.

USE A FLASHLIGHT TO SEE UP IN THERE, YOU WILL NEED TO PICK UP ON THE FRONT OF THE TRAY , THESE ARE DESIGNED TO EMPTY THEM SELVES, BUT SOMETIMES WHEN THE DOOR GETS LEFT OPEN, IT IS OVERCOME WITH WATER AFTER THE AROMATIC DEFROST CYCLE, DOES IT'S THING.. A WET DRY VAC IS NICE WHEN CLEANING OUT ONE OF THESE WITH A FULL TRAY= LESS SPLASHING .. JAY

My Maytag side by side refrigerator [mod. #MSD2656KES, Serial #50518503JL] is freezing everything on the frig side on the two top shelves. Coils have been cleaned. Temp set:Freez=3, Frig=2. One week ago...

I have this same refrigerator, also purchased in 2006. Same exact problem. Fridge freezes, starting actually in the water line, you will notice water on door does not work, then top two shelves start to freeze. Lasts for a few days, then prob does not happen again for 6 months almost to the day. I've had this problem for almost 3 years!!! My service tech said to buy another, glitch in this system he can't figure out. Replaced damper x2, control board, and thermostat x2. Not sure what else to do. I hate the thought of more food lost to spoilage!

Stopped cooling

Hello cpuklutz
Welcome

You said, Kenmore; 21 cu ft; 10-years old; just stopped cooling; wondering if it even makes any financial sense to get estimate to repair, or is 10 years about it's trouble free length of service

Here is an article that you may find useful and interesting related to your situation.
Repair or replace?

When to pull the plug on your old refrigerator

It nearly always makes sense to undertake simple do-it-yourself repairs,
such as replacing a gasket on a refrigerator or a freezer.

Typically, you'll also find a troubleshooting section for more-serious problems
in the owner's manual.

Should you pay for a repair or buy a new model?
The answer depends mostly on the age of your refrigerator,
how much you bought it for,and the cost of the repair.

Follow these guidelines:

When a repair makes sense.

If your refrigerator is under warranty or less than four years old (three years for top-freezers),
paying for a repair makes sense.
Note that refrigerators under warranty might require service from a factory-authorized technician;
readers have found them on a par with independent repairers.

When a repair might be a wise choice.

If your refrigerator is out of warranty and is four to seven years old,
it might make sense to pay for a repair. Customers generally pay $100 to $200 for a repair.
But you might want to buy a new model even at this stage,
given that today's models are quieter and have added features.
Higher energy efficiency is another plus: Energy Star-qualified models made after April 28, 2008,
are 43 percent more efficient than conventional models built before 2001 and 56 percent
more efficient than those built before 1993.

When it pays to replace.

The repair costs more than half the price of a comparable new refrigerator.
Data also shows that it doesn't pay to fix a less-expensive top-freezer refrigerator
six or more years old or a bottom-freezer or side-by-side eight or more years old.

Thanks to better recycling programs, less than 10 percent
of a refrigerator you replace is likely to end up in a landfill.

Thank You, HUUUM

My Maytag MTF2172HR* keeps blowing the fuse

Hello,
You guys are gonna LOVE this one.
I called a local appliance repair man, who said it sounds like the compressor.
He went on to tell me if it was the compressor, I would have forked over $75.00 to him, and, now need a new fridge, as it's probably not worth to replace.
I was a bit angry, so, deciding what to do, I started snooping around the back of the fridge.
Everything back there looks brand new, and clean, so I was starting to think it wasn't the compressor.
I put in a new breaker in the circuit panel, and, still blew.
As I was behind the fridge, I grabbed the power cord, and felt something strange- looked down, the power cord was cut through and twisted, exposing the little wires inside, and, visibly crossing them.
So, I'm going to go to the appliance store, and see if they have a replacement power cord.
Thanks,
