Why is my Xbox 360 S freezing after 20 minutes?

This could be a case of the system over heating in which case you should have items removed from near your console.
You could also try removing the hard drive (make sure your Xbox is turned off before you remove it) and using your xbox without it, if that stops the freezing error then the problem lies in your hard drive.

Freezing up

Remove the Hard drive from the unit and try to play a game without it. if it continues to freeze, this will confirm a major issue that concerns the internal connections to the main board and hard drive bay. This will need to be repaired by Microsoft.

If the removal of the hard drive produces positive results, just replace the old hard drive with a new.

Game freezes after playing for a while but no red rings appear

Games freeze for two reasons. Overheating and the hard drive locking up. If you have your games installed, you most likely eliminated the overheating problem.

Since you are not getting Red Ring, it probably isn't overheating. That leaves the hard drive. Turn of the console and unplug it. Remove the hard drive. Now is a good time to clean any dust from the connectors or vents. Reattach and play. Some games like Fable 2, Fallout 3, and others are more prone to freezing when accessing the hard drive that others. If it is freezing more times than not, you have an issue with the hard drive.

Picture freezes

E79: Hard Drive Error... It could be a problem with the Hard Drive itself or a problem with the internal connection to the hard drive, Try removing the hard drive and playing without it. If it works with the hard drive removed then you may have a faulty hard drive m8. To test your machine before you buy another one, borrow a mates hard drive and test it in your machine, if you get the error code again then something in your machine is faulty. If it loads ok with a different hard drive then yours is definately the problem.

The freezing generally indicates that a memory chip is going out, or the hard drive is beginning to fail. This could also be a software conflict or glitch, so start by doing a system repair with your operating system or recovery disc. You will not lose any data by doing the repair. Also, go to and download CCleaner, run it on both the regular clean and the registry clean. This will remove any unused dlls or file extensions that may be hanging it up. If it's still freezing after doing this, then remove the memory and try one or the other chip for a while to see if it freezes. If it's the hard drive beginning to fail, eventually it will fail completely, then you'll know it was a hard drive issue. I'm leaning towards a software conflict/glitch or memory chip. Let me know how it turns out.
