Question about Dell 1600n All-In-One Laser Printer

1 Answer

Dell 1600n will not connect

I just got a used dell 1600n off craigslist. The system came with a disk but I can not get it to load. If I choose personal installation the next screen tells me "no printer found" and I can go no further. I tried installing using network but also ran into a similar problem. When i put in the ip address it can not find the printer. If I ping the address it does reply though. My computer (vista based) will print to the system - that works fine but I really need it for scanning. Any help would be appreciated because frustration is setting in.

One of the most common problems when networking is adding the correct subnet address. To check your computers.
Click on start
click on run
type in the box "cmd" (no quotes)
click in the black dos box and type
ipconfig
This will tell you the ip address and subnet of your computer.
The ip address need to be different for the computer and the printer but the subnet address needs to be the same

Dell 1600n to be used on an imac

Hello! Unfortunately, Dell printers mainly supply Windows drivers on their website. To print to this printer, your new iMac will probably pull a generic driver to use with the printer. It should still work no problem, as you're saying, however you won't be able to use the software that's available on the PC. The downloads available for your Dell printer are here:
Dell 1600n Printer Downloads

You can tell by clicking that link and looking under Operating System that only Windows operating systems are available, as well as the software shown below, which is only made for Windows based systems. As for the PaperPort software, that program is made by a company called Nuance. When you purchased your printer, you most likely received a trial or full OEM version from Dell along with your new printer as a software bundle deal. From what I can see, the software is only Windows based. Sorry!

Below is the link to a free viewer that can still read your PaperPort files:

Dell 1600n All-In-One Slow Printing

Most times the PCL driver will work just fine for printing .pdf documents. Occasionally you will need to us a PS driver to print .dpf docutments. PCL was designed to work best with MS Word, Excel, etc programs and PS drivers were designed to work best with Adobe .pdf.

One way to see if you have the PS driver already installed, is to (in Windows XP) start>control panel>printers and faxes>in here look for an Icon that represents your printer that has PS in place of the PCL. If this is installed then when you go to print your docuement, choose this icon to print with.

If you do not have the PS driver already installed, try adding the printer to your system. You would do this by (Windows XP) start>control panel>printers and faxes>add a printer wizard>Next>Choose your connection(local or network)>Next>Select a printer port>Next>Install Printer Software(If you have downloaded the most recent drivers, choose have disk and navigate to where you saved it. If you have the CD, use have disk and navigate on the CD to where the PS driver is>Next>You may or may not get the next window asking you to choose whick model of printer you are installing, it varies from printer to printer. From here it is pretty straight foward, just read the wizard and click next. The last step you will need to click finish for the drivers to actually install.

As a side note, not all printers have a PS driver available.

Dell 1600n printer driver for Windows 2003 Server

I had a similar problem deploying these printers, however i found using the XP drivers in 2003 does work fine. Not sure why dell doesnt have an installer for this printer in 2003 server, but here you go.

ftp://ftp.us.dell.com/printer/R165289.EXE

extract that file, note its destination directory. do not attempt to run the setup.exe, it will fail saying your operating system is not supported.

instead navigate to (if you didnt change the path) C:DelldriversR165289p0nPrinterPCLWINXP

this folder contains the driver you need to install manually.

one stange thing about these lexmark based network printers is the need to select 'local printer' during install, uncheck automatically search for my device, and then create a new TCP/IP port. Use the IP address provided by the network configuration print out you can access on the front panel of the printer. now just make sure to select 'lexmark network card' as the type of network interface. it should now ask you for your printer type, click have disk, and point to the driver folder mentioned earlier.

hope this helps. thanks alot dell.

Printer is not found by Computer

If the printer is connected through the USB than there could be an issue with the cable for the port that you have connected it to.So try different cable and ports. Also incase there is a software issue and reinstalling is not helping than you have to do a complete operating system reinstallation.
