Gateway nx560x screen black

I have a Gateway laptop NX560X has run great for years. No new hardware or software has been added lately.
The LCD blinked and went out. I could still see a fiant image. When attached to an external monitor I can tell the cpu works fine.
Research led me to believe it was the power inverter. Replaced it. Screen worked for 1 1/2 days blinked and went out. Replaced the Power Inverter again. Same thing. Replace the entire screen - same thing. Leads me to believe there's something else wrong.

Diagnostic test on the video card shows it works perfectly with an external monitor. Any idea how to test the output voltage on the power inverter?

  • Richard Neumann Mar 06, 2009

The system toggles between a remote monitor and the LCD. When toggled to the laptop I can faintly see the image. Have swapped a new and old LCD with old and new power invererts - problem persisits.

It works with an external monitor (see prior comments) Also, I can faintly see the image. My guess is something internally is turning off the light. I've seen some blogs regarding bug fixes on the Gateway power management software.

Brand new screen with brand new back light. LCD works for a bit, BUT if it goes into sleep mode, I can't recover the LCD. Remote monitor works fine.

  • Richard Neumann Mar 06, 2009

    Yup - see prior comment

  • Richard Neumann Mar 06, 2009

Trust me - done all the toggle stuff. There's a deeper problem here.

The ribbon cable is in good shape and is firmly connected at both ends.

RE:The ribbon cable is in good shape and is firmly connected at both ends.

That does not tell anything you either need to test the ribbon cable with a multimeter, and even there you cannot be sure that is not one of the connector bad.

The inverter has a resistor that will blow if there is a power problem.
A full test on the inverter is complicate , as it will require an oscilloscope, but understanding if an inverter is not working at all is not too difficult.

Thest the wiring harness that is connecting the inverter to motherboard, if you do not have 5 V in there then replace wiring cable.

Testing the inverter output is dangerous , as there is high voltage in there, however, if the inverter has regular low V in input, and no AC out, then the inverter is again faulty.

If the inverter is defective replace it.

If the inverter is fine try replacing ribbon cable, if that does not work you have a faulty LCD display, or a defective video chipset bus to the internal LCD.

If I was in your shoes I would start looking for a same model laptop for spares on Ebay, that is the cheapest way to get parts.

The inverter output

Again: LCD works for a bit, BUT if it goes into sleep mode, I can't recover the LCD.

That is not the inverter, and if it is the inverter failing after a while, then you cannot just test this with a multimeter , but you need an oscilloscope.

If it is not a defective inverter that start returning wrong frequency or shut down when overheating, then it is the power saving management on motherboard, that is managed by bios.

To find out if it is the power saving start the computer with dos screen, and leave it in dos for one or two hours, if you want open a colored picture file in dos, to put the inverter under stress.
if it is the inverter it will turn off the same, if it does not , it is a faulty power saving, in that case replace power saving.

If LCD turns on the ribbon cable should not have anything to do with this.

Hi Rich.

Ok, you have gone through power inverters and even put in a new screen. The next two things to look at are the wiring harness and the connnector at the board itself. Check for cont. at both ends of your harness. Good Luck.

The cable might "look" in good shape but on the inside it could be worn, especially since you said it was old. Did you check for continuity in ribbon cable?

Hi!

When you say you replaced the power inverter, are you referring to the back light inverter? If yes, sounds like you have a power supply problem. Giving it keeps effecting the board, you keep replacing! Good luck, I hope this is helpful.

Check the cable going from the LCD to the system board. Is it crimped or cut?. If it is ok, then reseat it at the system board. The only other possible culprit is the video circuitry on the system board.

My gateway nx560x needs the bios updated and another driver re installed but windows will not load up what can i do?

hello, your model of laptop (NX560X) is able to boot of the usb port, what that means is even if you don't have the laptop working, and don't have a floppy drive, you can use USB flash drive, usb floppy etc to boot up the laptop from.
you should use other PC (perhaps the one you are using to post here :-)) to download bios from gateway website and then use usb device to boot your laptop. Below is the direct link for your laptop and here you will find latest firmware and drivers;
http://support.gateway.com/support/drivers/search.asp?st=pn&param=1008644
After you are able to flash the BIOS, test to see if the you can get into windows.
post back your results so we can further troubleshoot the issue.

hope this helps

FLICKERING AT THE BOTTOM OF LCD SCREEN

On a 3 month old laptop don't even bother finding out why just get it back to get fixed under warranty. The flickering can be from several things but unless it has been damaged there is no way you should have any problems even small ones with that new a laptop.

The flickering can be a bad connector or power problem which you might see on a 3-5 year old tired laptop but definitely not acceptable on a new one.

Gateway laptop screen is black?

This could have several causes, including malware installed on your system, but is frequently the result of some kind of hardware driver conflict. Have you recently installed any new hardware or software to your system? If so, disconnect it and try again.
The black screen is an indication that the windows os is not booting onto the system. If you have the recovery console installed, or have the cds, you can run the recovery console to troubleshoot or repair your installation of windows. This procedure is different for xp or vista, so we need to know what os you're on, as well as any error messages you see when it fails to boot.
To begin with, try tapping F8 as it boots up and see it you can get into the OS options screen, then choose Last Known good configuration to boot windows.
Here's a great article to help you troubleshoot the situation, then let us know how it goes and what comes up..

I hope this information allows you to resolve this issue. If you need further assistance, please post back with a comment to this thread.
If I've managed to answer your question or solve a problem, please take just a moment to rate this post....thanks!
