North gate computer hard to turn on

I have a Northgate computer w/ Pentium IV. To get it to turn on, I have to turn off switch in back, then turn on again, then turn off, watching green led on speaker. As soon as it almost goes out, I quickly turn power switch on again, and computer usually starts up. Usually won't work when warm, but usually always works when cold in morning. One time couldn't get it to boot up at all, and took power supply out and cleaned tons of dust out of it, also took out processor and tooth brushed it and reinstalled, then in a couple of days worked again, except have to do the green led deal. Is this normal?? Otherwise, seems to work. Bought a used processor from ebay recently for it, but haven't tried it yet. Any suggestions?

    Hello

It doesn't shut off once started up. It could use new heatsink compound. Where do I get that? Radio Shack? One comment said to check bus speed. I'm a novice; how do I do that? ? I do have the mainboard info book that came with the computer.

First thoguths are to ensure that the system is clean. Check that the fans are fully functional. If you don't have enough airflow then the PC will overheat. My first thought was to change the powersupply, though I still think that should be done, first check that everything is absolutely clean. You should have at least two fans in the system. Not counting the fan in the powersupply, there should be one on the CPU and then one system fan.

Back up any important files to CD, USB Flash Drive, or External hard disk as they will be lost during this process. Insert the recovery disk and restart the computer. When prompted, press any key to boot from CD, then follow the prompts on the screen.

I have lost my operating system for my north gate desk top computer and would like to know if there is a way to get it back it is an northgate pc

Just borrow from someone an Windows install disk of the same type with the one you had and install it in your pc. The only other thing you will need is the personal Windows key - you will find it on the label stuck to the case of your pc. Later you might need to install some drivers - you will be notified if you must do that.
