Hi Mr fix-it. I was putting the tiller into the truck and it ran into the bed. Pushed the recoil housing into the metal screen over the blower/flywheel. It wouldn't pull out or go back in after I was able to cut the screen free. I bought entire new recoil set up, took old off but there is another pully still on the motor. Has a real weird nut or bolt to the shaft that has to come off before new unit can be bolted back on. Hope this explains it.

mr fixit, i figured it out. just wasn't using enough pressure when pulling on the pulley. But now, it seems like I also damaged the clutch. the recoil is not grabbibg when pulling. it did catch 2 pulls, but no more. according to parts book there is a cover, a rachet, and a ball that are 1 assembly, with a housing attached to the flywheel. I assume the ball has to drop into a hole to engage the clutch and it isn't dropping? No I have to call part distributer to check now.

Thanks for trying to help. I have broken too many things with my strength so I am sometimes too gentle. Thanks again.

SOURCE: Need to obtain a new belt and pull rope for my Tiller

you can get a pull rope at wal-mart.measure the belt and any parts store or place that sells lawnmower belts should have one.if the rope broke close to the end knot just pull the end knot with some needle nose pliers.once you have all the old rope out lay the old rope pieces on the ground and cut the new rope to match it as far as length.turn the pulley that the pull rope goes in six turns counerclockwise.then turn the slot the knot was in to the hole the pullrope goes thru and fish it thru then pull it up and out with apaiar of needlnose have someone hold the pulley until you tie a small knot in the end of the pullrope the hold the pullrope and let it pull it in.you might have to cut some off at the handle if its still too long.to do this pull some rope out and tie a quick knot so the rope can't slip back if you let it go.

SOURCE: Air cover for 820 Rear Tine tiller is missing

Many times I use a window air cond. filter for this type of thing and then use ty raps or rubber bands to secure. Anything is better than letting dust get into engine.

On my tecumseh tiller the rope broke and the setup has rivets instead of screws is there another way to get it off without removing the rivets?

I'm guessing you have a 3.5 or 4HP 4 stroke with the recoil built into the top of the housing? If so, just remove the entire blower housing. It's only 4 bolts. You can then disassemble the recoil assembly to replace the rope.

Recoil not returning rope when pulled

There is a spring inside the pull cord housing that makes the cord come back in, it probably undid itself, remove the housing cover and rope assembly and you will see the spring, you need to retighten it and place everything back. hope this helps

Help, new craftsman rear tine tiller stopped tilling.

It sounds like the belt just stretched. Now you need to move the belt tensioner over to put more pressure on it.

Put it in gear and as soon as it has a load it stops tines and wheels. Has trans grease, and have tried to tighten belt by the two side adjustments but it will not move? It is an older tiller Kohler engine...

It sounds like the key that holds the pulley on the front of the tiller transfer case has sheared into. Carefully remove the belt safety cover so the belts are exposed and start the tiller. With a flashlight look at the pully on the lower shaft and shaft area. Carefully engage the tines and see it they are turning. With a second person visually, from the side, inspect the pulleys to make sure they are turning. Now carefully load the tines and see if the pullies of shaft stop turning. If the shaft stops and the pulleys keep turning then the key on the shaft has sheared off. If both keep turning then you have something that has broken or sheered in the transfer case. This type of inspection is dangerous and needs to be done at a distance with a flashlight so you can see down in the shaft area when standing off to the side while someone loads the tines. It is very difficult to try and see if the shaft is sheered in the pully as is the case without the engine running. The key has friction and it is difficult to turn the tines with the drive engaged to the engine. The only other option is to disassemble the transfer case to see what has gone bad. Please be careful testing it. Good Luck, RAC
