Question about Elna 2007 Mechanical Sewing Machine

1 Answer

Hi, my elna Super Su tension knob seems to be broken - am trying to quilt but the tension bit just flaps about although the knob itelf turns. have tried varying the lower tension, the stitch length, everything but it keeps coming back to the tension. Underthread not being stitched properly, it just gets carried along under the fabric. Any suggestions?

Hello, Please can you tell me how to lower the dogs teeth on Elna SU airelectronic 68 so as to do free hand embroidery. Thank you julie Roberts

The owner's manual would have that information. If you don't have it, here's one:

Instruction Manual Elna 68

unfortunately, Elna manuals are usually not free

You could probably also ask your Elna dealer how to do darning on your machine. You will also need a darning or free motion quilting foot for your machine. Your machine either has the ability to raise/lower the feed dogs or the machine came with a darning plate to cover the feed dogs.

How do you adjust the tension control on an Elna lotus SP

The tension dial is on the front of the machine right above the needle. The higher the number, the tighter the tension is applied to the top thread. HINT: When threading the top thread, ALWAYS RAISE the presser foot throughout the entire threading process. This allows the thread to seat completely in the tension disk. Tension is correct when the top and bobbin threads meet in the middle of the fabric.

I am having problems with getting the tension right when quilting with a walking foot. At first the top stitches were bobbly now the bottom stitches are wrong. What should I adjust to balance perfectl

When you are adjusting thread tension it is important to test it on fabric of the same thickness. Keep adjusting the tension while testing on similar fabric. Turn the knob just a little bit each time until you get the right tension. You might also need to do some lint cleaning.

Why does the tension on my elna air electronic su 68 keep tightening up?

Firstly the SU AE is a great machine, I am assuming that the top tension is the problem as the Elna rotary hook and bobbin tension design should not be touched. (There is a little dial with numbers on and it should be set with the red number one put at the lever: don't move this from this setting.) And the top tension should be at 5 although sometimes you may move it between 4 -6 depending on the fabric you are sewing. I am wondering if the top tension dial is a bit gunked up with old thread or dust? You could check this yourself, if you turn it all the way down to zero and raise the pressure foot so that the tension discs are open. Now get a clean piece of scrap fabric with a selvage edge, cotton or calico is good. And run the selvage edge between the tension discs and see if you can remove any old gunk, black stuff from there. All thread contains dye obviously and dye particles do come off thread and can gunk up in this tension device. Also, make sure you are using good quality thread and following the correct threading path for your machine. Sounds like you might not have the manual and if this is the case, by all means contact me at tallygirl98 at yahoo dot com and I'll send you a scan of my manual. Lastly, you might find the Elna owners group really helpful, just get onto Yahoo groups and search for Elna Heirlooms group, you'll need to request membership but I've found that there are many Vintage Elna owners who are happily servicing and keeping their Swiss made Elnas ticking over sweetly and they share their knowledge. Hope this helps.

Elna tavaro

If you are in USA, then talk to White Sewing Center, they are the Swiss Tavaro made machine specialists.

There are some parts listed for sale on Elna Star 62 SU Parts but I can't see the top tension knob listed. Haven't actually pulled one of these apart but I have had a go at several other repairs, I would suggest that you start by joining the Yahoo Group called Elna Heirlooms, you need a yahoo profile, then find the Groups page and search for this group, you will need to request membership from the moderator. Once you are a member, you can search the various subject threads, one of the members will have covered this repair for sure. The members are really great and share their love of these great Swiss made machines.

My elna club 4D seems to be working backwards. if i turn the knob backwards (the arrow shows i must turn it forwards) it sews, but if i turn the knob forwards (in the right direction) the threads don't...

What were you doing immediately before this started? Buttonholes? I bought an Elna SU in 1973, still going strong now. Sometimes after doing buttonholes it did weird things - fortunately I had two friends with identical machines to help me. I hadn't put all the controls back properly after doing no turn buttonholes. I just wonder if you'd got the same problem?

My Elna Super has a single disc stuck in the top. My stitch width is at 0 as well as my stitch length and the selector is on A. Pressing on the knob will not release the disc. Any suggestions?

Turn the stitch selector off "A". Try again to release the disc by pressing on the central knob..

If you look at the elnagraph, can you see if the reading arm has moved away from the disc? If not, try rotating the fly wheel until the circle mark on the disc lines up with the white arrow in the elnagraph. Now try again.

There is actually a slight variation in the discs between the early supermatics and the later models - is it possible that you've acquired this disc from other than original purchase with the machine?

You can find out quite a bit of information on this if you subscribe to the yahoo group called "Elna Heirlooms" the other members are very knowledgable on the discs and there has been several theads on this. You might want to join up and read through past messages, there is also info under files and photos, lots of helpful members.

The difference is in the little hole on the underside of the disc that a little finger (called driving pin) locks into. Its deeper on some than others.

If you find that you still can't get the disc out then you may need to take it to an experienced SM technician for him to do a service. I treasure my Elna Star Series SU machine and will never part with it.

MegaQuilter Tension

Try at least 2 new needles first (HLX5, preferably Schmetz). If same, look for any rough edges on the needle plate and feed dog cover.
Beyond that, this does not sound like you are doing anything wrong. You should take your machine in for adjustment by an authorized technician. You should have about 1/2 to 1 full turn of the upper tension knob between too loose/ugly on back and too tight/breaking on the top.

Have a 1970's elna su supermatic but cams don't work

There are two types of discs - single and double.
For the thinner single discs do as follows:
1.Turn stitch width knob to "0"
2. Turn stitch length knob to "0"
3. Insert the single disc
4. Turn the top selector to "A"
5. Make sure the needle selector is in the centered position.
6. You may now choose any stitch length or width you wish. I usually try "3" for the width and 1/2 for the length to start.

For the thicker double discs do as follows:

1.Turn stitch width knob to "0"
2. Turn stitch length knob to "0"
3. Insert the double disc
4. Turn the top selector to "A"
5. Make sure the needle selector is in the centered position.
6. You may now choose any stitch width.
7. The stitch length must be put on "A" - this is the difference between the single and double discs!
I hope this helps!
