Motherboard Layout

Motherboard view shown is actually turned 90 degrees to the Right, in reality to how it actually is mounted in a computer case.

The front of your computer is the Front Panel.
The area of contact pins on the motherboard, that the main wires from the Front Panel go to, is the Front panel header.

Motherboard installed in computer case, the Front Panel header is to the Right of the CMOS battery, and located in the Bottom/Right corner, placed in a Vertical position.

Two columns of contact pins.
4 in the Left column, 5 in the Right column.

The pins on the Left side are numbered EVEN.
The pins on the Right side are numbered ODD.

Starting at the BOTTOM coming up towards the Top; Left side,
Pins 2, 4, 6, and 8. There is NO Pin 10.

Starting at the Bottom coming up towards the Top; Right side,
Pins 1, 3, 5, 7, and 9.

A) Pins 1 and 3 are for the HarDDrive activity LED. (Light)
Pin 1 is for the Positive wire.
If the HDD LED is dim when the harddrive is active, switch the wires around.

B) Pins 5 and 7 are for a Reset switch, IF a Reset switch is used.

C) Pin 9 is N/C. Not Connected. Probably 5 Volts + for factory testing.

D) Pins 2 and 4 are for the Power On LED. (Light)

Pin 2 is for the Positive wire.
If the PWR LED is dim when the computer is on, switch the wires around.

E) Pins 6 and 8 are for the Power On switch.

F) There is NO Pin 10.

Just a start. Do you need what CPU's are supported?

1) Intel Pentium 4, Socket 478 processors that are either Willamette Core, or Northwood Core processors.

A) 400Megahertz Front Side Bus (400MHz FSB)

B) Up To a 2.8GigaHertz (2.8GHz), Socket 478 -> Northwood Core - processor.

(Motherboard manual shows specs for using Intel Celeron's, that use a Socket 478 processor socket, but WHO cares?
'Celeys' aren't worth bothering with )

Starting with Willamette Core. Northwood Core processors are in the next chart. (Socket 478)

The motherboard chipset is a Northbridge chip, and a Southbridge chip,

(CPU = Central Processing Unit. Another term used is Microprocessor, or Processor for short)

The Northbridge chip is a SiS650GX
The Southbridge chip is a SiS 962L, or SiS 962,

Install Processor first. (Remember to line up the Processor's; Dot/s, or Arrow/s with the processor socket's Dot/s or Arrow/s)
Thermal Paste correctly applied, Heatsink set properly. (F-L-A-T)

Plug Processor fan power wire into motherboard.
(White 3-pin connector to the Top Left corner of the Processor socket, and close to the top edge of the motherboard.
CPU_FAN)

Install Ram Memory.
Install motherboard on Support Plate.

The Support Plate can be a separate metal plate, or is part of the computer case.
When mounting the motherboard to the Support Plate, and NOT using plastic Spacers, but ARE using metal Standoff's;

,make SURE that EVERY Standoff is matched up, to a mounting hole in the motherboard.

IF, there is a Standoff not matched up to a mounting hole, there is a good chance it will touch an exposed solder joint on the bottom of the motherboard, and short the motherboard out.
(Maybe Processor, Ram Memory, graphics card if used, too )

On the back of the computer tower is a thin metal rectangular plate.
This is the I/O area, and the I/O Static Shield.
I/O stands for Input/Output.
Input devices and Output devices are connected in this area.
Mouse, Keyboard, Speakers, etc.

Every motherboard is supposed to come with it's own I/O Static Shield. If there is one already present remove it, use the one that came with the motherboard.
(Watch the edges! May be SHARP!)

Motherboard is installed tilted at an angle, I/O ports down.
Then I/O ports going slightly through the I/O Static Shield, the opposite side is brought down.

Two power cables from the Power Supply to motherboard;
1) 24-pin ATX main power cable;

Plugs into the 24-pin ATX main power cable connector, to the right side of the Ram Memory slots.

2) 4-pin ATX +12 Volt power cable;

Below the processor socket is the Northbridge chip. It is under that finned aluminum Heatsink, with Foxconn on it.
To the Left is a small 4-socket hole whitish connector.
This is the 4-pin ATX +12 Volt power cable connector, on the motherboard.

The Floppy Disk Drive flat ribbon IDE data cable, goes to the Black 34-pin connector to the Right; of the 24-pin ATX main power cable connector, on the motherboard.

Uses this Small 4-pin Peripheral power cable,

(WATCH the contact pins on the Floppy Drive, for the power cable. They are Sharp as NEEDLES, and will stab you! They BEND real easy too!)

The Harddrive's flat IDE ribbon cable connects to the BLUE 40-pin connector, below the Black Floppy Drive connector.

BOTH, a Floppy Drive flat ribbon cable's connector, and a Harddrive flat ribbon cable's connector, and an Optical Drive flat ribbon cable's connector; have a LUG on one side.

This Lug is to match up with a small square Cutout, in the motherboard's matching connector.

The harddrive, and optical drive should have a square Cutout, in the circuit board.

IF, the cable connectors do Not have a Lug, or there is no Cutout on the Harddrive, or Optical Drive; post back in a Comment, and I'll detail how to correctly hook them up.

USB Headers: F_USB on the motherboard is for using TWO USB ports, in the Front Panel. (Page 22)

Audio Connectors (CD_IN) Page 23, is for the small audio cable that comes from the Main optical drive.
IF, you have two optical drives, use the one you consider the Main one, and attach the CD_IN (Audio cable) to CD_IN on the motherboard.
This connector is to the immediate Left of the number 2 and 3 white PCI slots.

Biostar Tpower x58 LGA1366 motherboard will not start or post


"I sent it for repair but it came back in the same condition!"

That means to me, spiritual_sky, that there is operator headspace.

Motherboard was fine when they tested it, and problem is on your end; Or they didn't test it, and shipped it back.

Going to go through the basics, so be patient. Mistakes are often made by those of us who are technically qualified, due to simple errors.

A) The Support Plate the motherboard is mounted to, can be a separate plate, or is an integral part of the metal frame, of the computer case.

1) It looks as though there are 10 mounting 'holes'. (Manual gives no details. Looking at it right now. Going by Biostar Support page, and main view)

Is there a metal Standoff on the Support Plate, that does Not line up with the mounting holes? If so it is touching an exposed solder joint.
This = No

B) Have all the power cables needed connected to the motherboard?

1) 24-pin ATX main power cable. (Hooked end of Lock on power cable hooked over Tab on motherboard connector)

2) 8-pin EPS +12 Volt power cable.
Has 4 Yellow 12 Volt wires, and 4 Black ground wires,

Has a Lock on the power cable connector also, and Tab on the motherboard connector. When plugged in properly, and tightly, the hooked end is over the Tab.

Connects to Left Upper corner.

Not to be confused with an 8-pin PCI Express power cable,

[NOT an inference towards you, but I have seen people who could destroy a steel ball bearing in a sandbox, with a rubber mallet. They would try to cram an 8-pin PCI Express power cable, into a connector on the motherboard for an 8-pin EPS +12 Volt power cable ]

Three Yellow 12 Volt wires, FIVE Black ground wires.

A 6-pin PCI Express power cable will fit, and work, in a connector for an 8-pin EPS +12 Volt power cable.
Problem is it does -> Not, deliver the power that an 8-pin EPS +12 Volt power cable will deliver.

A graphics card senses whether a 6-pin, or an 8-pin power cable is being used.
SOME graphics cards will not work unless it is an 8-pin.

3) 4-pin standard Peripheral power cable. (Misnomered as a 'Molex' power cable)
Provides auxiliary power for the graphics card.
Manual states,
"This connector is an auxiliary power connection for graphics cards.
EXCLUSIVE power for the graphics card provides better graphics performance."

May be reaching here, but if the graphics card you are using does ->Not require an additional power cable connected directly to it, but does ->max out what the motherboard can provide, not connecting that additional 4-pin power cable may be the problem.

May need it even if the graphics card does have it's own power cable/s.

Graphics card requires a power cable? Better have it plugged in.
Requires TWO power cables? Better have two power cables plugged in, and Not just one.

Graphics has a problem? The motherboard will not start, or P.O.S.T.

Using a single Graphics card.
HAS to go in the PCI Express x16 slot next to the Northbridge chip, under the processor socket. (PEX16_1)

The PCI Express slot that is the same length at the bottom, is a
PCI Express x4 slot. This = No.

[Top slot next to Northbridge, {Copper finned Heatsink is on top of Northbridge chip},

PCI-Express x16 slot. Slot 1.
Next slot down is a PCI-Express x1 slot.
Next slot down is a PCI-Express x16 slot. It is Slot 2.
Next slot down is a PCI-Express x4 slot ]


C) Simple error; Front Panel header pinout.

Front Panel header (JPANEL1) is at the bottom right corner.
Pins 1 through 8 are on the Bottom row;
1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8.

Pins 9 through 16 are on the Top row;
9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, and 16.

A) Pins 1, 2, 3, and 4 are for an Internal speaker. For BIOS Beep Codes. Pin 1 is for the Positive (+) wire. Pin 4 is for the Negative (-) wire.

B) Pins 5 and 6 are for the HarDDrive activity LED.
Pin 5 is for the Positive (+) wire.

C) Pins 7 and 8 are for a Reset switch, IF a Reset switch is used.

D) Pins 9 and 10 are N/C. Not connected. There is No Pin 11.

E) Pins 12, 13, and 14 are for a dual color Power On LED.
Pins 12 and 13 are for the Positive (+) wires, Pin 14 for the Negative.
If just using a single color Power ON LED, use Pins 12 and 14.

F) Pins 15 and 16 are for the Power On switch.

Make sure the Power On switch is good. Remove the wires, touch a Jewelers flat tipped screwdriver to the two pins - Briefly.

Comes on you have a bad Power On switch.

Do you KNOW that the Power Supply is good? Tested the three main voltages?
(3.3 Volt power rail
5 Volt power rail
12 Volt power rail )

Just to ask; What is the maximum rated Wattage of the Power Supply, what is the Amperage of the 12 Volt power rail/s, and what is the manufacturer, and model number of the graphics card?

You didn't state the model number, unless that is it in the problem heading, STAX2517C2.

IF, this is the Model Number of the Northgate Desktop PC, it is supposed to come with a Foxconn/Winfast K7S741MG-6L motherboard,

Looks like the Front Panel header on the motherboard, is an 9-pin unit.
(Down by the round CMOS battery, black plastic rectangular header, 9-pins.
In the photo it is down to the Bottom/left corner )

May be an abbreviation silk-screened on the motherboard next to it.

Motherboard sitting in your computer case, the Front Panel header is sitting Horizontal, and parallel to the bottom edge of the motherboard.
There are two rows of pins.

4 across the Top row; 5 across the Bottom row.

The best method is to take an LED light with two wires, and touch two contact pins at a time.
I would go across the Top row first.

Start with the first two pins. Then the second two pins.
When you touch the correct two pins, the Power Supply will come on.
(So will the computer)

You now know that this is the two pins for the Power On switch.
Computer running do not touch the two pins again.
Now touch two other pins.

When the LED light blinks, you know you have the HarDDrive activity LED pins.
If the LED stays on you have the Power On LED pins.

If the computer restarts you know you have the Restart switch pins.

This is what I have that seems to be close, for a Front Panel header pinout for your motherboard.

HOWEVER, I would like you to connect the two pins to the Power On switch first. Just those two.
If these are correct there is a 99 percent chance the others are too.

A) Using an LED light will not harm your motherboard. If the computer isn't running, (Power Supply not on), then you will not be touching any 'live' pins on the motherboard.

Just make a brief contact, with the wires to each set of 2 pins. The Power On switch is a Momentary Contact Switch.

Pinout I have;

Looking at the Front Panel header - Top row;
Starting at the Left side, coming across to the Right side;
Pins 2, 4, 6, and 8. Blank spot -> No pin.

Bottom row;
Starting on the Left side, coming across to the Right side;
Pins 1, 3, 5, 7, and 9.

A) Pins 2 and 4 are for the Power On LED (Light)
Pin 2 is for the Positive ( + ) wire.
If the PWR ON LED is dim when the computer is on, switch the wires around.

B) Pins 6 and 8 are for the Power On switch.

C) No pin 10. Blank spot.

D) Pins 1 and 3 are for the HarDDrive activity LED (Light)
Pin 1 is for the Positive ( + ) wire.
If the HDD LED is dim when the harddrive is active, switch the wires around.

E) Pins 5 and 7 are for a Reset switch, IF a Reset switch is used.

F) Pin 9 is N/C. Not Connected. Probably 5 Volts (DC), and reserved for the factory.

Would appreciate hearing back if this pinout worked for your motherboard.

To the very bottom right is the Front Panel header.

The front plastic panel of the computer is the Front Panel.

The area of pins on the motherboard that the cables, (Wires) from the Front Panel connect to, is the Front Panel header. ( F_PANEL )

The Front Panel header, is the black rectangular shaped plastic block, that is sitting vertically on the motherboard.

Has two columns of pins.

Hi there, the wiring sequence that I have is for the UK, I dont know where you are but I hope this helps
pin 1 Yellow L/H direction Indicator (turn Lamp)
pin 2 Blue Rear Fog Lamps
pin 3 White Earth Return
pin 4 Green R/H direction indicator (turn Lamp)
pin 5 Brown R/H Tail Lamp & No. Plate Lamp
pin 6 Red Stop Lamps
pin 7 Black L/H Tail Lamp & No. Plate lamp

you will have to trace the wires from the wiring loom and light clusters off the car to splice in the towbar wires which is quite easy, the chassis should have location points for the bracket, just make sure that the tow hitch is central and not obscuring the number/license plate..

Look at the pinout of the Front Panel header, of the eMachine W3400's motherboard.

The plastic front of the computer is the Front Panel.
The area of pins on the motherboard, that the cables (Wires) from the Front Panel connect to,
is the Front Panel header.

The motherboard for an eMachines W3400 desktop computer is an MSI ms-7145
(Micro Star International)

Orient the motherboard in your view so that we are both looking at it the same way.
Processor to the Top, Ram Memory slots to the Right, white PCI slots (3) to the Bottom.

JFP1 is the Front Panel header.
(Junction Front Panel 1)

JFP1 is on the Bottom Right corner. There are two columns of pins arranged vertically.
(The JFP1 header runs parallel to the Right side of the motherboard)

The Left side column of the JFP1 header is numbered Odd.
Starting at the Top and going Down, the pins are numbered;
1, 3, 5, 7, and 9

The Right side column is numbered Even.
Starting at the Top and going Down, the pins are numbered:
2, 4, 6, and 8.
There is NO Pin 10

A) Pins 1 and 3 are for the HarDDrive Activity LED light. (HDD)
If the LED light is dim will operating switch the wires around

B) Pins 5 and 7 are for the Reset switch. (Reset button)

C) Pin 9 is Not used. (NC. No Connection)

D) Pins 2 and 4 are for the Power On LED light (If dim switch the wires around)

E) Pins 6 and 8 are for the Power On switch. (Power On button)

Trace the wires back to the Power On switch. Even if it means temporarily removing part of the Front Panel to see.

Same with the LED lights.
See which wires go to the Power On LED, and HDD Activity LED. (Harddrive Activity LED)

Follow the 3 wires, and tell me where they go to on the Front Panel.
USB port?
Memory Card Reader?
Firewire port? (a1394)

I have a E machine T2862. It will not start up


if you look closely(with a magnifying glass) the motherboard is labeled next to the pins

here are some sites that may help you.
all these should be marked power switch may say pw,prs,ps, power led may say pld, pl,led, hhd say hd, reset switch maysay rs, set, these connection will be grouped together, and pin layout 1 red or hot wire, or the main wire for the device you are trying to operate.

the connections to the back plate is standard the amount of pins match up the cable, the number 1 pin will be marked some how and or the cable will only be able to plug in one way.
with an exception if you are using serial connector and we hardly use them. the rules are the same as above, and plug ins maybe one way also.

the ribbon type will have a marking on the cable or ribbin line or dots or hasshs marks that is pin #1
match with pin out on motherboard pin1 or pin 0,
