Question about Mitsubishi WS-65513 65" Rear Projection HDTV

Wavy picture Picture is very wavy when I turn the t.v. on for the first 20 minutes or so, then clears up. Not sure if it is a problem with my Directv or my television set. Mitsubishi 65513 picture is wavy from all sources first 3 or 4 minutes and then is OK.

It is your TV problem and there would be few capacitors in power supply and deflection section that are weak and should be replaced for correct picture.

If you are comfortable with electronics repair, have electronics knowledge, soldering tools then check weak and leaky capacitors in TV and replace them. This will resolve TV problem.

Check electrolytic capacitors in Power Supply and Horizontal Deflection area on main board.
you will notice few caps plastic jacket (cover) is bit shrinked, replace them with same value.

It looks like you have a convergence problem here, probably a defective convergence IC.

    Do the steps below:

To start unplug TV from power for ten minutes.

Try unplugging the video cable, test the TV with a different receiver box and also with a different cable if possible, this will tell you if problem is TV.

If the problem is the TV, then if you have wavy picture, with colors blurred and not matching, or distorted picture at the screen side, then that means that one of the convergence ICs had blown.

Replacing the convergence ICs is a delicate job, and must be done by a technician.

Link below shows the replacement procedure on a different rear projection, procedure is very similar on your TV:

Hello,

The problem with the television is the lamp. It is faulty that is why the screen turns wavy in minutes.

The solution to that is to replace the light and your television will be in good condition once again.

Take care

I need the model number to be sure. I am guessing that a 2200uf or a 3300uf capacitor in the main power supply is going bad. Call a good TV Tech and explain it to him. He should know where to find it and replace. Should cost around $175 at the most.

I gather from your post that wavy can mean two possible things as the TV comes on, you see the picture flow like ocean waves? In this case you may have 60Hz hum modulating with the picture, this is actually unlikely these days, but I have heard it happens sometimes. The other thing it could be is light horizontal tearing. This happens when the horizontal frequency is too high or too low. You are not going to like my solution because I feel that for problems like this the set must be analyzed not just subjected to "shotgun troubleshooting", so here I go, Take the TV to a repair shop.

this is caused by a bad convergence module, and there are probably some dried out electrolytic caps in the circuit as well. i have one in the shop right now that came in with the same problem. if you have it serviced, make sure they replace all of the convergence modules (there are usually 2, but sometimes 3 of them), because if one went bad the other(s) is likely to go out soon as well.
