Question about Brother MFC 420CN All-In-One InkJet Printer

1 Answer

Brother 420CN machine said replace yellow. Replaced yellow. When lid is closed, machine asks if the yellow was replaced and to enter 1 for "yes" and 2 for "no". I enter 1. Machine says to open cover and replace cartridge. Go through the same procedure again. Same thing happens each time.

Thanks krhtechy1. I did all of those things after I posted the notice. I used Q tips and cleaned the areas where each cartridge sets.

I did a couple of things (dont't know exactly) and suddenly it started working. I am not really sure what fixed it. Anyway. I learned a lot and have already picked out a new machine when this one is gone.

Try replacing the yellow with a new cartridge. Does it specifically say the yellow cart? Go to menu and select ink levels. It should display the level of all of the inks. Maybe another one is out as well. I have troubleshot quite a few of these printers, and it is a common failure. Try to replace with a new cart if you find it is saying the yellow for sure. Try to give more info....

I have a Brother MFC-620CN just changed the ink cartridges but the printer still says ink is empty and won't print

Hi
I have looked it up for you and what I found is.

Title:
I replaced my ink cartridge, but the LCD is still displaying "Ink Empty". What can I do?
Description: This is typically caused by an incorrect selection made during the LCD prompting after a cartridge is replaced. When an ink cartridge(s) is replaced, the LCD will ask, "Have you removed Blck? 1 Yes 2 No". This question will be asked for ALL 4 colors in sequence, regardless if the color was replaced. If "1 Yes" is NOT selected for the color(s) that was replaced, the LCD will return to "Ink Empty". Do the following to clear the message:

  1. Pull the scanner cover release lever located below the control panel and lift the top cover.
6e8a1a6.jpg
  1. After 15 seconds, re-close the top cover and then re-close the control panel cover.

  2. The LCD will then display Have you removed Blck? 1 Yes 2 No.
The LCD will display this question for ALL 4 colors (not just the ones replaced). BE SURE to select 1 YES for each ink cartridge that was replaced.
If 1 Yes is selected, the LCD will then display Change to new (color)? 1 Yes 2 No. Again, BE SURE to select 1 YES.
Note "Change to new (color)?" will only appear if 1 Yes is selected for "Have you removed (color)?" If 2 NO is selected for the "removed" question, the LCD will then move on to the question for the next color.

Cartridge not recognized

Try to put hot water in each cartridge install, not so hot but normal hot that can disolve hard liquid component. When an inks happens not used more that 3 months it will become hard that might be possible the printer would not able to get the specific color because the cartridge getting problem.

****NOTE****

Make it sure the bottom part of the cartridge will not filled hot water where you can see the circuit outside, so make it sure only the sides of the cartridge filled with hot water.

Then make it sure after filling water you need to use dry cloth to make it dry before putting back again to your printer head.

Hope this will be helpful.

I have replaced all the ink cartridges and my printer says "no cartridge, open scanner cover"

It is probably best to replace cartridges individually as necessary. Let me explain. The printer display will tell you when a cartridge is "xx near empty" and when "xx empty" (where xx is the cartridge color).

1) Near Empty - you can continue to print. This message is to remind you to get a new "xx" cartridge and have it on hand.

Replacing the cartridge when "Near empty" will cause the machine to report "xx Empty" when it is not. It will not register that you have replaced it at "Near empty." Wait to replace the cartridge when you get the "xx empty" message.

2) XX Empty - you may not be able to continue printing. Replace cartridge "xx" now per your manual.

If you have replaced or reseated more than one cartridge, and you get the "no cartridge" error, you need to find out which one the machine "thinks" is problematic:

1) With the scanner cover open and locked in the "Up" position, the message may change to "Change cartridge, install xx" (xx refers to the color )

2) After changing the suspected cartridge and closing the scanner cover, be sure to notice the display. It will say, "Changed XX? 1. Yes 2. No" Press 1.

If all this explanation does not work, keep it in mind for next time. Brother says to unplug the machine for at least 10 seconds, then plug it in again. If the display shows the date and time, problem solved. If not, you may need to contact brother support.

unplug maqchine from power. take all carts out. wait 5 minutes. connect machine to power. insert carts as demanded. give the right answer if machine asks if the carts are changed. machine will do some cleaning.

do you use generic ink? in that case you might have clogged the printhead with wrong ink. The ph cant be cleaned anymore.

nevertheless try this (carts should be nearly full!):
press menue then start mono (blue copy) then fourtimes arrow up. machine will be in maintenance mode. press 7 then 6 then 4. Machine will display init_all. press start mono. machine will refill tubes and
ph with fresh ink and do some cleaning. after that press 7 then 6 then 3 and start mono. machine will do a powerpurge.
press zero then 9 to do a quality test print. If it cant do the job leave maintenance by pressing 9 then 9. do the test print manually by pressing ink etc.

If you still do not see any colors the ph is clogged and cant be fixed anymore. It has to be replaced.

Cartridge not recognized

Yes. Unplug machine from power. Wait 5 minutes. open scanner and take all the carts out. close scanner. plug machine to power again. machine will do the start up cleaning. Machine demands carts. insert NEW carts and give the answer in case you are asked by machine.

Do only change the carts when machine stopps for EMPTY cart. As long as it shows Nearly Empty everything is alright.

The machine has a drop counter and counts the ink drops down to zero when the flag is raised within the (nearly) empty carts. In case you take them out at that moment and reinsert again the ink inside will splash and raise the flag again. Control logic will be in trouble....

Take all carts out. Close cover. Unplug machine from power. Wait a minute. Plug in machine to power. Machine demands carts. Insert new (!) cart as demanded from machine. In case when asked push 1 for YES: cart changed.

BTW:
Always print until machine stopps printing. Display says NO INK XY. After replacing the cart machine will print the rest data out of its memory.

NEVER change cart when machine says low ink (This is only a hint to buy a new cart!). At this point the cart has about one third of ink left!

Printer continues to say "yellow ink cartridge almost empty"

hmmm...perhaps it's a refill and brother doesn't recognize it?  Does it just give you a warning, or does it shut the machine down?

Thanks,

Won't say it has a new cartridge of yellow

unplug mfc from power. take all carts out of the assy. wait two minutes. plug in power. machine demands carts. reinsert one cart after another which will be asked and displayed from machine. For the "old" ones push 2 (no change) for yellow 1 (yes). Machine should start cleaning afterwards. Do only change carts when machine STOPPS printing! Otherwise the eeprom logic will be fooled (and give wrong info!)

Mfc brother printer

Something that has worked for some Brother owners to get cartridges recognised.

1. With your MFC powered up, open it up and remove the cartridge you are having a problem with, then close the MFC, leaving it powered up. It should report that there is no cartridge in the machine.

Still with the MFC powered up, open it up and reinsert the ink cartridge, then close the MFC. It should either ask if you have replaced a cartridge or go into its cleaning mode.

Answer "yes" to "have you replaced cartridge?" and it should either "print" or "clean" and then "print".
