TV Turns off by itself

My TV while on ''shudders'' and black bars appear on the left and right as if the TV is resizing the picture and then eventually shuts itself off.

I believe the "Caption Vision" is selected. By pressing the "Display" button on the remote it should toggle through the choices until "Display Off" appears. That should be all.

How do I change it from wide screen to regular? I have a black area above and below the picture.

Hello
You can set the picture size by remote control itself.

You can vide 480i format programmes in three picture sizes. 4:3, 16:9, and ZOOM
You can change the picture size by pressing the PICTURE SIZE button on the remote control.
4:3 Picutre size
To fill the screen, the top and bottom edges are extedted more widely, although the center of the picture remains near the former ratio.
If receiving a 4:3 programme, the image size is displayed in its originally formatted proportion.
16:9 picure size
This image displays the size of standard 16:9 with black bars at the top and bottom.
If receiving a 4:3 programme, the image is displayed with black bars at the top and bottom and stretched wider.

NOTE: If a fixed bar remains on the screen for a long period of time, the image can become parmanantly engrained in the screen and cause subtle but permanent ghost images. Never leave your TV for long periods of time while it is displaying these images.

Zoom picture size [for 16:9 formats]
The entire picture is uniformly enlarged --it is stretched the same amount both wider and taller (retains its original proportion). The right and left edges of the picture may be hidden.
OK.

My TX is about 14 year old. The picture alwasy was excellent until we had an exlectrical storm that knocked out the cable box to the TV. With a new cable box the TV works. The picture has excellent color,...

Try your cable box on a different tv set and also try connecting the cable directly into the t.v, if that makes no difference then your tv set may have a power supply problem that was caused by an a.c line surge during that storm.

Picture wandering to the right....

I suspect you have some filter capacitors failing in the power supply and/or the deflection circuits. It may actually be worth repairing this time! It could also be bad solder connections.

Picture slants right to left

Hope you have fixed this problem by now, if that tv is unserviced, I mean if nobody has ever opened it, it could be a problem with the positioning of your tv, just tilt the tv in different positions and find out the position in which it will show the right fit. If it is serviced, especially yoke is changed, this is rare, it could be because the position of yoke is not aligned properly.

Picture has rolled up leaving a black bar on the bottom

Greeeting from Belize you are having a problem either with cold solder or a problem in the power supply those lines are hum bars due to a defected filter cap.resolder your power supply if that does not solve the problem then you replace the power supply you can get a power supply kit from www.dalbani.com in florida.good luck.also make check in the vertical section if you cannot do it your self take it to a qualified tech to resolve your problem this should cost you about $75.00. to get it fix.

Screen split with black bar through center, top of picture shows in bottom

It sounds as you desribe, the vertical output IC and or the b+ feed capacitor off the Hi voltage transformer feeding the vert. IC its required voltage. Not a really hard job to replace, but not for a handi person to do. This should be left to the professional, as there are no user serviceable parts inside this set and with the HI voltage and the safety issues its best to call somesone to assist you with this repair. Good Luck
