Check the operation of the relief valve. This is usually located near the regulator and gauge and has a small ring that you fit your finger in and pull outward. When you do so, compressed air should be released. If this is stuck or cant be released, there is your problem. It is quite dangerous to let the tank reach pressures beyond that allowed by the relief gauge. Usually 120-150 PSI.

Sounds like the tank check valve is bad. recommend replacing the check valve located at the end of the air discharge line and tank.

At about 130 psi it goes into grunt mode...the sound it makes when it's trying to kick on with too many feet of extension chord. To get it to kick on again, I have to drain down the pressure to 20. ...

This compressor draws too much power to run efficiently with an extension cord, however, sometimes one does not have a choice. For best results, connect directly to outlet. The problem that you describe could be caused by the extension cord or the check valve leaking air which in turn loads the pump making it difficult for the motor to start. Easy test. With air in tank (+100pse) remove air line at the checkvalve and test for leak with soapy water. If leaking, replace valve to solve problem of "grunt mode." If no leak and connected directly to plug with same problem, test start/run capacitor for proper valve. It should measure within 95% of printed value. Parts are available at www.toolpartsdirect.com . I have a 5 HP Coleman air compressor. I was using it to provide air to my plasma cutter which requires 60 psi to operate. Basically, air compressor's motor keeps running, but it's stopped creating air...

You did not list model number, however if you have oilless type check the cylinder/piston by manually turning crank until piston is at top and examine cylinder for wear or scratches. If worn replace cylinder kit for full pressure. If ok check reed valves /valve plate for wear or broken reeds. If oil bath type, problem is usually air leak or reed valves / valve plate. As a general rule, you can keep track of wear by noting how many minutes it takes to fill the tank to cut-out. As the compressor wears it will take increasingly longer to fill. When new, and depending on tank size/ hp, most compessors fill within 2 ~ 5 min. Good luck

Have a husky 19 gal 1.5hp it kicks on when first start to work and when it builds up air and i use it and when it wants to kick back on it wont i have to wait till it cools down.

Is there an option for you to run this compressor on 220 volts vs 110 volts??? If so, you may want to convert it by following the re-wire instructions on the motor or wire access plate/instuction book. The reason your compressor won't fire up again after building pressure is the head pressure is to great at restart and 110 household current is not enough to give the power needed to turn the piston. You'll need to replace the plug and have someone run a 220 volt circuit once the conversion is completed.

Keeps on cycling on and of when not in use?

I believe you have a faulty pressure switch. The black hose reports to the switch what the pressure is and either starts or stops the compressor through the switch. Air is bleeding out of the hose ...causing short cycling ... for some reason. Fix the leak - fix your problem

EC-12 runs but only builds to 35 psi and continues to run

It looks like there might be a knob which sets the max air pressure coming from the compressor. If there is one, this may have been turned down.

There are usually 3 pressure settings on an electric compressor. Compressor max, pressure switch cut on, and pressure switch cut off.

Switch doesn't turn off

IF IT WONT TURN OFF MANUALLY EITHER, THE POINTS IN THE PRESSURE SWITCH ARE PROBABLY MELTED TOGETHER AND WONT RELEASE FROM EACH OTHER. A PEICE OF THE PLASTIC SWITCH MAY HAVE BROKEN AND JAMMED IT. REPLACE THE SWITCH. TAKE THE OLD SWITCH WITH YOU AND PAY ATTENTION TO YOUR CUTIN AND CUTOUT PRESSURES.

Wont kick off, runs constant

It is possible that the capacitor is bad, check the mfd rating on the capacitor which will be probably around 35mfd or 45mfd as example. Replace capacitor with exactly the same microfarad rating as the original.
