Convert a gas dryer to electric

I've installed a photovoltaic solar system on my house and am currently not paying for electricity, unfortunately my new dryer (pre solar install) is natural gas, is it possible to convert my existing gas dryer to electric? The dryer is a Whirlpool Duet.

Even if you could change it to electric you would need way more solar. I always thought natural gas was dirt cheap. What does your water heater run off of ? You can convert your dryer to propane so it WILL work in the event of a national disaster. If that's what your after.

Can this samsung gas dryer convert in electric dryer too

While it is possible to convert your dryer from electric to gas or vice versa, you will find the cost to be excessive and not worth consideration. A gas dryer will have3 a gas burner and ignitor circuit system while the electric dryer will have a heating element and controls. This is NOT a practical conversion nor would it be cost effective. If you need a gas dryer for your new home, purchase a new dryer or save a few $$$ and check your local Craig's List for a good deal on a used gas dryer. Just beware that you don't buy someone elses problem. There are legitimate sales caused by moving or upgrading appliances that will allow you to find a great bargain. Drop any notion of converting your dryer!

You cannot convert a gas dryer to electric. Do you a natural gas line for your furnace? A plumber can easily T into the mainline and run a drop for your dryer. This would be cheaper than buying a new dryer. If you do not have natural gas in your house you will need to buy a new dryer.

What do you do if your out let for your house is only putting out 110 instead of 220 at the outlet.

Depends ... what is 'normal house voltage' where you live?

If you are installing a new electric dryer in the USA, typically, they operate at 220 Volts. If there is no special outlet at the place where you want to use the dryer, you will have to have an electrician install the proper gage wire and outlet for you. Expect to pay up to $200.00 or more for this installation from the house main panel to the dryer location.

If there is a gas line at the location, you may want to consider exchanging your electric for a gas model.

no you can not convert :-( putting in a dryer receptical is probably your line of least resistance it is typicaly 30 amps at 240 vac. so it will require special wireing 10/3 nmd7 , 2 pole dedicated 30 amp breaker, and a special receptical not a problem unless the basment is finished dry walled ect,, and you are trying to put the dryer on the second floor (far away from breaker panel) that could get costly fast ..get a qoute. just a side note I highly recomend using a licensed eletrician depending on where you live making modifications to electrical or plumbing in a leased house can leave you liable long after you move out
Good Luck

I have Whirlpool front load dryer ) I just moved into a house that has a hook up for an electric dryer...can this dryer be converted to electric?

Hi, how are ya?

To answer your question,
i your dryer is a gas then no, you won't be able to convert it to electric because a gas dryer uses 120V whereas an electric uses 240V.

Sorry, good luck :)

Converting gas dryer into electric dryer

i don't think you can convert the gas dryer to an electric dryer.

there are so many issues to consider.

1 the contacts of the timer would be a big problem,
2 the heating element wiring uses big wires where as the existing wires are very small to handle the big current of the heaters.
3 the configuration of extra part that you would have such as the gas solenoids, the ignite r, the flame sensor, etc which electric dryer does not have.

and more....

so bottom line is..... can not convert.

tnx 4 using fixya,

Gas dryer

Hi Mette-q,
Welcome to fixya.com

I'm Huuum,

You said, you have a Kenmore gas dryer mod. 110.95087400 ser. ms0201135 it's a smartheat quiet pak9. Is there anyway I could convert this from natural gas to electric, is there a conversion kit available.

They do have conversion kits for gas to LP.
But I believe that there is no gas to electric.
You must find a gas line from some where in the home and run it to your location, or buy an electric dryer.
Remember that if you can run a gas dryer it will save you 30% on your energy bill over electric and in time pay for the cost of running the gas line to it.
I hope you are not in an electric only house!

How old is the dryer?? Waiting for your response!
Thanks for giving me the opportunity to help!
Please do not for get to give a rating before you sign off!
Thank You, HUUUM

Here is a interesting report that I just read today

Repair or replace?

When to pull the plug on your old refrigerator

It nearly always makes sense to undertake simple do-it-yourself repairs,
such as replacing a gasket on a refrigerator or a freezer.

Typically, you'll also find a troubleshooting section for more-serious problems
in the owner's manual.

Should you pay for a repair or buy a new model?
The answer depends mostly on the age of your refrigerator,
how much you bought it for,and the cost of the repair.

Follow these guidelines:

When a repair makes sense.

If your refrigerator is under warranty or less than four years old (three years for top-freezers),
paying for a repair makes sense.
Note that refrigerators under warranty might require service from a factory-authorized technician;
readers have found them on a par with independent repairers.

When a repair might be a wise choice.

If your refrigerator is out of warranty and is four to seven years old,
it might make sense to pay for a repair. Customers generally pay $100 to $200 for a repair.
But you might want to buy a new model even at this stage,
given that today's models are quieter and have added features.
Higher energy efficiency is another plus: Energy Star-qualified models made after April 28, 2008,
are 43 percent more efficient than conventional models built before 2001 and 56 percent
more efficient than those built before 1993.

When it pays to replace.

The repair costs more than half the price of a comparable new refrigerator.
Data also shows that it doesn't pay to fix a less-expensive top-freezer refrigerator
six or more years old or a bottom-freezer or side-by-side eight or more years old.

Thanks to better recycling programs, less than 10 percent
of a refrigerator you replace is likely to end up in a landfill.
