How to clean CPU socket

I am a hardware engineer. Most of the problems are due to improper contact of processor to socket. What is the sanderd procedure to clean the socket?

Posted by on

  • Thomas F. Schneider May 11, 2010

Most of the problems are improper socket contact. I have worked on many and not see this  problem even once. I have resseated CPUs due to excess heat caused by fan dust or non working fan but the is is due to overheat. Overheat and hard drive failier, I believe. would rank as number one and two ?   If I did have dirty contaacts on  CPU pins, I would carefully clean them with spray tuner cleaner.

Need to upgrade cpu for using multiple progams at on time, can cpu be upgraded on this older model compaq presario S0000 / 8000 series computer

As you have stated it's a Compaq Presario S0000/S8000 SERIES desktop computer.

One of the S0000/S8000 series.
Without knowing the exact model number I have no idea of what hardware is installed on the motherboard.

On the back of the computer tower, or up on the side, is a white Service Tag.
P/N = Product Number. This is the exact model number I need.

Also; Going to HP Support with the exact model number may not reveal the info I need, either.
They may not list the specifications, and therefore the installed hardware, for your computer.
There is an easy way around this, however.
Use CPU-Z from CPUID.com

What info is needed in order to know if the Processor can be upgraded:

A) Processor Socket: What processor socket is installed on the motherboard. This is what the Processor sits in.

Just two examples for Intel processors; Socket 478, and LGA 775 processor socket.

1) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Socket_478

With this style of processor socket, the processor socket has the socket holes, and the processor has the contact pins. (478 holes/478 pins)

2) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LGA_775

With this style of processor socket, the socket has the pins, while the processor has contact pads.

There are other styles of Intel processor sockets. There are also AMD processors which can be used, and have many different processor sockets also.

B) What motherboard chipset is used.
Specifically, what Northbridge chip is used.

3) Chip and Chipset are slang terms for I.C.
Integrated Circuit,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Integrated_circuit

For your motherboard the motherboard chipset is a Northbridge chip, and a Southbridge chip.

{So aptly named Northbridge, and Southbridge, for the relation of how they sit on the motherboard.
Looking at a motherboard as if it were a map, the Processor sits to the North.

The Northbridge chip sits close to the Processor.
The Southbridge chip sits to the 'South' on the motherboard }

The Northbridge chip handles the faster capabilities of a computer.
It handles the Processor, Ram Memory, and High-speed graphics.

The Southbridge chip handles the slower capabilities of a computer.

4) Motherboard Diagram,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Motherboard_diagram.svg

Knowing what processor socket is used, and what Northbridge chip, we can accurately determine what processors are supported.

CPU-Z is a tiny, free program that without opening your computer, tells you what hardware is installed on your motherboard.
Tells you what processor socket, and Northbridge chip are used, for one.

5) This is information on CPU-Z. Shows you a screenshot of the user interface of CPU-Z,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CPU-Z

Left-click on the CPU-Z user interface to the upper right of the page, to enlarge it.
(Under the bold CPU-Z heading)

When CPU-Z opens it automatically opens to the CPU tab.
(Central Processing Unit. Another term used is Microprocessor, or simply Processor for short)

To the right of - Package - tells you what processor socket is used.
Clicking on the Mainboard tab tells you what motherboard chipset is used.

6) CPU-Z download page,

http://www.cpuid.com/downloads/cpu-z/1.56-setup-en.exe

Left-click on Download now! in the purple rectangular box.
A small window will come up on the right side -
Opening cpu-z_1.56-setup-en.exe

Left-click right on Save File
Another small window will come up on the left.
In the header at the top of this small window, tells you where the file will download to.

In the wording may be Desktop, or My Documents, or Downloads.

Desktop: The file will be on your desktop screen.

My Documents: Left-click on Start, then on My Documents

Downloads: Left-click on Start, then on My Documents. DOUBLE-click on Downloads.

When you see the file name DOUBLE-click right on it.
Follow the easy installation instructions.

Go back to your desktop screen. Double-click on the CPU-Z icon.
When CPU-Z has loaded, come back here in a Comment, and tell me;

1) In the CPU tab, what is stated to the right of - Package

2) Left-click on the Mainboard tab.

What is stated to right of;
A) Manufacturer
B) Model
C) Chipset
D) Southbridge

How to recognise a pin and pi nnless processor

A pin Processor has metal pins on the bottom of it.

For an example let's use an Intel Pentium 4 processor, that fit in a Socket 478 processor socket.

http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/Pentium_4/TYPE-Desktop%20Pentium%204%20Willamette.html

Viewing the link above, observe the green square under the grayish metallic looking square.
The green square is a circuit board.
(Width and length, about the length of your first digit on your thumb)

The grayish metallic square, is a metal shell cover over a Chipset.
Chip and Chipset are slang terms for I.C.
Integrated Circuit,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Integrated_Circuit

The Integrated Circuit here is the Processor.
The Processor is connected to the green circuit board. (PCB. Printed Circuit Board)

On the bottom of the green circuit board are contact pins. In this case 478 of them. (478 pins)

http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/Pentium_4/Intel-Pentium%204%201.7%20GHz%20-%20RK80531PC029G0K%20%28BX80531NK170G%29.html

The tiny metal contact pins fit down into matching socket holes, in the processor socket.

A Socket 478 processor socket,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Socket_478

(You can click on the photo to the upper right to enlarge it.

The next design to come out, has the Processor with contact pads, (Pinless), and the processor socket has the contact pins.
An LGA 775 processor socket,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LGA_775

Example of a Pentium Dual Core's bottom side. (LGA 775 processor socket is used),

http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/Pentium_Dual-Core/Intel-Pentium%20Dual-Core%20E2220%20HH80557PG0561M%20%28BX80557E2220%20-%20BXC80557E2220%29.html

There you have it.

A 'Pin' processor has metal contact pins on the bottom.

A 'Pinless' processor has metal contact pads.

My computer automatically shuts off when not inactive for 5 minutes

Hello jeepmallabo,
The shutdown is probably due to hardware overheating. Make sure that your CPU fan is automatically increasing in speed when the processor is being used. You should hear the sounds.
It is possible that the fan controller may not be working or the fan itself is going bad. When dealing with retail CPUs, its always best to purchase an aftermarket CPU cooler.
Hope this helps!

What kind of CPU coolers are compatible with HP Pavilion a1710n?

That's a hard question to answer, you need to fine out what CPU you have inside and then look up CPU coolers for that CPU style. Since your using a pre assembled machine you may have a specialized hole pattern making an aftermarket cooler hard to find. and use.

CPU gets very hot amost immediately at switch on and liquid coole

yes its common, its called unessary maintence. the best way is install a biger electric fan or set multipal fans. these issues are really due to breakdown in processor and hardware. such as improper shut downs and start ups and how long the cpu been running. next check to see if your power supply is sufficient it maybe to much or little pending what you have plugged in ,o.s.
and connection time.
