The best option is to buy another pull start assembly from the engine's manufacturer. It is possible to rewind and/or fix the existing pull start assembly but is seldom worth it. The reason it is apart in the first place was probably due to breakage or excessive wear.

Good Luck,

How do I replace a blade carrier boss hayter mower

These are fun projects that consist of methodically taking the unit apart until you have the broken part isolated. Then putting it all back together with the replacement part as the centre of attraction.

Cant figure out what is wrong

Take apart the carb and clean it with carb cleaner. Be careful when you pull off the bowl some of them have springs that are tricky to put back in. Drain all the fuel that was in the tank. Check the plug and make sure it's still good if it hasn't run in 5 years then it's probably still good a visual inspection should tell. After the carb is clean put it back together and it should start right up.

I have a toro 2008 toro recycler walk behind mower and i was using it in high grass and it stalled out. I attempted to restart it and the pull cord was locked. Need help trying to get it to start again.

I hope you've got oil in it and didn't seize the engine. If you hit something that stopped the blades then you may have busted the timing key, which is underneath the flywheel. It could be busted and jammed up underneath there. If you're not familiar with taking that apart, then you'll need to bring it to a professional. It's actually a simple repair if in fact that is your problem. You pull the flywheel off (easier said than done w/out a gear puller), then you take the old timing key out and match it up with a new one and put it all back together. Again, not sure if that's your problem, but you at least need to take the top part of the mower apart to determine if the pull-cord / recoil is still functioning properly. Should just be 4 one quarter inch bolts to remove on top. In other words, first determine if the recoil is not functioning or the engine is not turning. WARNING! NEVER TURN THE ENGINE/BLADE WITHOUT FIRST DISCONNECTING YOUR SPARK PLUG WIRE. TURNING THE BLADE COULD START THE ENGINE AND CUT YOUR APPENDAGES OFF? Hope this help. Good Luck.

Pull start cord got pinched. Dumb me took off

Yes you can put the spring back in but it takes patience. Wind the spring inside the pully first. Then install the cord on the outside of the pully. Make sure you wind both in correct direction. You probably should replace the cord while you have it apart. The parts would be listed by the engine brand and model number, not by MTD. Probably a Briggs & Stratton engine? You can go to their web site :www.briggsandstratton.com to get part numbers. Or you can try a place like www.jackssmallengines.com

The starter rope on my B&S 375 engine snapped. Is it easy to replace? I took the cover off from around the starter and it seems to be popped riveted onto the top of the engine. Many thanks

The pop rivets are irrelevant. if you look in the center of the nylon retract pulley inside, you'll see the screw that holds it all together. Take that screw out, and the pawl system will come out(make sure you remember how they came apart), then you can pull your retractor out, take the old rope out, put the retractor back in, wind it up all the way, then you can run the new rope in and tie the knot. Then let it draw the new rope in, put everything back together, and if you let it draw it in and had rope left over, pull it out about 4 inches before you put the handle on. Don't let go of the rope at this point, or you'l have to take it apart again. After this, make sure everything's back together the right way, and put the cover back on.
