my hp officejet v40xi says off hook when I try to send a fax. I hear not dial tone. can you help me I am using sbcglobal service

It will say 'off the hook' if the line is in use. There should be dial tone on the line before you can fax something.

Note that if you are sharing a fax line with a phone/dsl line (basically have only 1 wall jack, like me) to make sure you use a phone cord that only has 2 gold connectors (look in the head on either end). Most regular phone cords have 4. If you hook the 6110 up with a 4, the 6110 will say that it is "off the hook".
