Try the drive in another computer or try another drive in yours.  If the drive doesn't work in another computer, the drive is bad.  If it does, then there is a conflict in your computer.

Dvd rom reading cds not dvds

Not uncommon issue with ALL DVD drives, it is often a failure in the DVD circuitry of the drive and will require that the drive be replaced entirely. There is no fix or repair for this type of issue.

PS. When problems occur with optical media, it never hurts to run a CD/DVD clearer disk through the drive. These disks have physical bristles (brushes) embedded on the data side of the disk that will dust of the laser lens.

My HP compaq 6710s does not read DVDs what can i do?

Sorry to hear about your Compaq 6710 DVD problems.
Ok, you say it does not read any DVD's.
How about CD's and does the unit Burn OK.?
I would try and good cleaning first, before getting too far gone into needless repairs.
Have you tried to reinstall the drivers for the DVD. ?
Look at you device manager and see if you have any flags.
If you have had any kind of VIRUS problems or data lose, you may consider reloading the software and drivers.
If all else fails, most Compag and HP drive are the same bootstraps. and may work as test units.
If you know someone with a extra DVD drive or has a unit laying around you can pull and DVD drive from.
If the cleaning kit does not do the trick, reload the drivers and software.
Before replacing the DVD drive, go on the HP web site and update the drivers for that drive.
Also you may want to update your BIOS settings while their.!

If that does not work for you replace the DVD drive.

Hope this information has helped you.

You might try unistalling the drivers and reinstalling them from the device manager. However, this sounds like a harware issue, your DVD drive may be shot.

Windows XP not recognizing cds/dvds in my HP DVD640i

Most likely your CD-DVD burning software is corrupted. When that happens, the machine doesn't recognize the existence of the CD/DVD hardware. Clean up your machine, defrag, run a freeware registry cleaer-defragmenter (see C-net for a good one). Then Reinstall/upgrade your burning software (the Windows XP software is not sufficient) either from HP/Compaq, if it came with your machine, or the program website if you purchased it separately. You may find out which it is by using a marvelous freeware program called Belarc advisor.

DVD drive can read cds with no problems, but can no longer read DVDs

If you have used and/or burned a DVD that wasn't tested to work successfully with your DVD-rom then there is the off chance that it ruined the DVD portion of the drive. I have had the same problem myself and unfortunately the only solution is to replace the drive or get an external drive. If your laptop is still under warranty then see what the manufacturer can do for you.
