Problem with the Samsung SpinPoint P120 SP2514N 250 GB IDE Hard Drive

Problems with Samsung SP2514N (Spinpoint P120 Series)

By Mini Me on Aug 02, 2007
Hi, this is my first post on this forum. Is there a FAQ or charter?

Anyway, I'm experiencing error messages with my 250GB Samsung SP2514N
(Spinpoint P120 series).

I split it up in 2 partitions.

When running defragmentation O&O Defrag, I get error messages on both
partitions, even though it manages to defragment anyway.

Also, Windows XP (SP2) seems to take forever to finish checking the disk
(partition 1; part. 2 seems OK); it seems to hang for what seems like ages
when entering phase 2 of the disk checking app.

Eventually it eventually proceeds, though sometimes I get a message saying
the disk check could not be completed.

However, none of this *seems* to affect Windows, and when running HUTIL, the
Sammsung diagnostic software, it finds no errors.

So what is going on? This has been bugging me for months. Any ideas/tips
welcome!

, etc.

Run chkdsk from the command line. Since the gui tool says there are
errors run chkdsk /f or /r for both partitions. Error and cleanup
messages will be displayed on the screen and in the event log if you
schedule it on reboot.

chkdsk cannot correct problems in read-only mode. See if it can
correct the filesystem in /f or /r mode (either from the command line
or checking the options in the gui tool) and then see if defrag
problems persist. Check the event log for other O&O Defrag messages.

Its not a forum, its a newsgroup.

Nope.

How have you got those formatted, NTFS or FAT32 ?

What happens if you dont run O&O Defrag ? There isnt any point in
obsessively defragging anymore except in a very few special situaitons.

Presumably O&O Defrag leaves it in a considerable mess.

Then its unlikely to be a hardware error.

The most obviously possibility is that O&O Defrag isnt working
properly. Try running without defragging for a while.

That is consistent with the possibility that O&O Defrag leaves it in a mess.

I'd try running without O&O Defrag for a while and see if the problem goes away.

Post the Everest SMART report here.

"Arno Wagner" < ...

Well, the Windows disk checking app doesn't actually give any errors, except
(on part1) it takes a long to to complete the diskcheck, seemingly hanging
at phase 2. And sometimes it ends before completing, displaying a message
saying the diskcheck could not be completed.

O&O Defrag's check for errors software generates a report stating: "Error:
file system damaged." Same goes for the other partition of the Samsung disk.

It is impossible to say anything reliable without knowing what the
error messages are.
