Try to reformat the hard drive and install Win XP. If does not work, your hard drive is corrupt and you will need to get a new one.

Put the XP disk in the computer and start the computer. Find the option repair MBR. This may be all you need to do.
If this fails put the drive in another computer and check the disk for errors.
Check the jumpers on the drive. Should be set to master. Have you verified the BIOS settings.
Does Gateway have its own version of windows. If so it may be the problem, as such versions are often model specific. Found that to be so with Toshiba.

Must install on a computer of the same model if problems are to be avoided.

Do a Repair Install using the WinXP CD.

Don't go into the Recovery Consol, but continue with installing Windows. Eventually it will detect a previous installation and offer an option to repair it. It it does not detect your previous installation, quit the installation or you will lose your data.

This should fix the problem which is likely that the boot sector on the hard drive is corrupt without affecting your data.

How to format/install SATA 2TB hard drive (BARRACUDA) in Gateway GT5098E, Win XP Media Center Edition 2005?

Windows XP doesn't support SATA. You will need to use a program such as Nlite to integrate sata drivers into a new Windows XP disc. Once you have a disc with sata drivers just boot to the disc and follow the prompts to format the drive.

Brand and model of acer aspier am5641-b5560

If I understood you well, the XP OS installed on WD IDE HDD belongs to another computer, in this case you cannot simply install it on your Acer computer and expect it to boot without problems because the hardware is different. What you can do in this case is a fresh Windows installation.

I have an older Gateway laptop that I rarely took out of house

you'll have to buy a new but tough to find 2.5'' serial-ATA hard drive, this should solve your problems but you'll have to reinstall any operating system and also all of the data on the current hard drive will be lost.

PC Will Not Boot

hi there
i do agree with you about the ribbon cables please make verry sure that they are connected right ie set as master or slave also make sure that the ribbon is tight and then make sure that you boot into bios and see if the computer can recognize the drive and see if it is set to master or slave and see if there are any jumpers on the hard drive that match with what bios is telling you cause if the bios is set to master and you have the jumper set to slave it will not work
