Either dust/dirt inside (unlikely but possible) or a damaged optical light engine--Google the model number with "problems" etc.

Rca scenium 50 inch dlp. i now have 3 black blotches in the screen. they look like giant finger print smudges. very noticable on light colored screen.

You have a problem in the light engine portion of the set. Somewhere in the optics. It could also be a build up of dust or a foreign substance. Have a repair shop give it a good cleaning inside. You may want to pull the bulb and make sure there is no foggy places inside of it. Thanks

Faint red blotches visible on light backgrounds on Sony KDF-42WE6

Convergence issues usually present as colors not lining up or a sort of "3D" effect like when you had to wear the green and red glasses. I'm no expert but it sound like you may have a magnetizing issue. You can test this by placing a large, very strong magnet on the "blotchy" area.

Slowly move the magnet in an ever widening circle. Pull the magnet back off the screen about an inch once you have circled the entire blotch but continue to rotate the magnet. Do this for about 5 minutes. If you don't see any change once you may need a stronger magnet or this is not the problem.

I had the same problem with a 6 year old Toshiba 50H13 and I found this tip online somewhere. I used a half dollar sized, rare earth magnet. I noticed a change almost immediately.

Hope this helps

BLOTCHES ON SCREEN

This may not be the problem, but the following service bulletin may be of interest:

Last Update: 1/25/2006
Document Reference/Event ID: E30094243
Model: KDSR50XBR1, KDSR60XBR1
Subject: Picture might have a slight Greenish tint.

SYMPTOMS
Under certain conditions (especially cold/ first power ON), white areas of the picture may take on a slightly greenish tint after power on until internal temperature stabilization is achieved. Typically, this disappears after approximately 10 minutes operating time, however, in certain cases (i.e. colder conditions) the set will continue to fine tune the picture longer that 10 minutes. This is in order to create optimum picture performance under nominal viewing conditions.

This is not a defect but a characteristic of the LCD panels. Be assured that the time it takes to disappear will neither lengthen nor reduce over time.

If the condition improves but reduction in effect is desired, there are customer adjustments that can minimize this condition. Please demonstrate these adjustments with the customer, to determine if these settings are acceptable. (User adjustments are supplied in Solution A)

In cases where no Uniformity improvement is achieved (after 30 minutes power on time) proceed to Solution B; Optical block

Note:
Please be aware that all Optical Blocks exhibit warm-up behavior.
Replacing an Optical Block will not eliminate or significantly reduce the time below 10 minutes.

RESOLUTION

CAUSE:
Internal temperature stabilization needed.

Solution A)

You may reduce this effect by changing some user settings as follows:

(1) Change the Color Temperature setting to Cool - (refer to page 81-82 of the instruction manual). If further reduction is desired proceed to step 2.

(2) Slightly Reduce the Green bias (only available in PRO Picture mode under Advanced video settings), then select white balance Adjustment - (refer to page 81 of the instruction manual). Example:
a. Menu, Video, Picture Mode, Pro Mode
b. Menu, Video, Advance Video, White Balance, G-Bias (Reduce several steps)

Solution B)

Replace Optical block after gaining approval from Sony Tech. line.

Purple blotches

Ok, so I'm about to flip a lid with my TV. I am showing purple quater sized blotches all over my screen. I bought it for a discounted price because of this issue, in hopes i could fix it. I took the back panel off the TV. ( about a 6in * 6 in plate) removed the light bulb and cleaned the bulb and lens, where the light bulb faced. I used a dust cleaner and special cloth. NOTHING! I took the entire front screen off cleaned it and then cleaned the mirror and second lens.... NOTHING! Then i heard that dusk sometimes gathers behind the lens and that should be cleaned. Try this, Its 4 screws, just be careful and remember the way you took it out, because it has to be replaced the same way.
