This type of pull starter design is very poor and fails often. Cheap parts and cheap design leads to poor performance and yet Troybuilt still doesn't give free parts or an upgraded design.

On my 4-cycle garden cultivator tb-144 the starter rope pulls free and does not engage when pulling the rope. It's like something is broke.

Sorry Mr. Fixit, I don't think that is what he's talking about. I've got the same problem with my Troy Bilt cultivator. The cord takes back up just fine. It just does not engage the engine. It just free spins.

Replace pull cord

Easy to do - go to Utube and they have the instructional video on how to accomplish this. Hardest thing is to get the cord - Home depot only sells it in 50 foot lengths. But you can get a kit complete with handle for about five bucks same store.

Warm up time on a Troy-Bilt cultivator

I have a Cub Cadet 4-cycle cultivator and it takes a while to warm up as well. I assume that is the norm for those small 4-cycle engines. But it should not take more than 3-5 minutes to warm up enough to go ahead and start tilling. Unless of course you live in a fairly cool climate. In that case it may take a little longer. I live in Tennessee.

Which fuel line is the intake line at the carburetor?

The fuel line goes:
  1. From the filter in the tank to the carb, usually the bottom most connector.
  2. From the carb to the Primer. The tube in the center of the primer bulb.
  3. From the primer, outer tube to the fuel tank.

Oil coming out breather

It possible that the PVC is stuck closed or the hose attach form the PVC to intake manifold is either pinch shut or the hose has

collapsed, not allowing the crankcase to have a negitive presurre. The other possiblity is the cylinder rings may have to much blow by thus forcing the oil out throught the dip stick tube. Check the PVC system first.
