If it is a Zama carb, the set up procedure for a new carb is on line. Only problem is that with the new carbs you might need a special tool to adjust the low and high mixture screws. To get around this you can use a dremel tool to cut a straight groove across the head of the adjuster(s) so you can then use a flat blade screw driver.
There is no fixed carburetor setting on these engines, just two screws to adjust low-end and high-end operation. Special tool may be required, there are about a half-dozen screw head standards. Check eBay for tool. Get the engine to run and idle fast (idle adjust) so it doesn't stall, adjust low-end screw so that engine doesn't hesitate or sputter when accelerated. Adjust high-end screw to run fast and smooth on full throtle. Readjust idle to normal.
Most poulan chain saw have three screws idle, high, and low.. if you look air filter cover you will usually see three holes and the high and low will usually have plastic covers on it.. adjust the low 1/4 of a turn and the idle screw in about 1/4 or until the idle picks up... On the plastic cover where the three holes are you will see H which is High L which is Low and I which is Idle... Let me know if you have any problems.. thanks
A special tool is required to adjust the carb screws, it should be set up from the factory for the best emmissions, so there should be no need for you to adjust them, however the L screw controls the low speed and acceleration up to half throttle, the H screw controls the max rpm, the the third screw just controls the idle speed, if you need the tool it is part no. 530035560, both screws are fuel, not air screws, screw the L screw in until you get the highest revs, then back it out 1/4 turn, screw the H screw in for the highest rpm, now back off 1/4 turn. if the machine does not pick up smooth increse the L screw bit at a time until it does, if the full revs sound too rich, screw the H screw in a very tiny bit.
General advice aplicable for all gas powered chain saws;
Clean air filter regularly.
-Adjust spark plug gap (very important). A faulty gap will either cause poor spark or a overloaded and damaged spark plug coil.
-Use correct good quality spark plug
-Use correct oil/fuel mix ratio and correct oil.
-Do not use old premixed fuel if you can avoid it.
-idle speed setting screw should be set so that the saw idles well, without engaging the chain. If you normally have to press the gas lever to be able to start it coul indicate a to low seting. Clockwise will increase idle speed. This screw is found near the carburator and is slightly larger the the two adjusment screws.
- fuel-air mixture screws can be set to standard factory setting as a start. Normally there are 2 screws labeled L and H, for Hi and Low rpm band adjustments. Factory setting are usually 3/4 turn out(anti clockwise) from fully closed setting for both (clockwise to closed position).
Experiment with adjustments by 1/8 increments at the time. Anti clockwise turning will increase fuel to air ratio and opposite. Warm weather will require a slightly leaner mix and cold weather will reqire a slightly richer mix(more fuel). Low rpm setting only serves the idling performance. The Hi rpm setting can be evaluated by removing the spark imediately after running at full load for a period. The spark plug should be dry, and be lightly brownish at the electrodes. White-ish color indicates low fuel to air mix, and this causes too high combustion temperature. A black colour indicates a too high fuel to air mix ratio, and it causes carbon build up on the plug.
If you still have starting problems, cylinder/piston compression is the next to check for. This is a more extensive job and should best be left to professionals, unless you are very skilled and have access to special tools required. Compression on modern saws are very delicately balance, so the slightest damage to either the rings, piston or cylinder can cause problems. Is is not alwas worth to replace the cylinder and piston kit, so compare prices and ask for advice at your dealer.
hello,the starting point for adjustment screws is 2 turns out.turn in til lightly seated so as not to damage them. there are 2 or more style carbs used on saw,some have plastic caps that need to be removed(a small metal screw used as a corkscrew or pry off) or you need a special tool -splined.set high spped til runs good and back off an 1/8-1/4 turn so you dont burn it up. fine tune low spped so it accelerates when trigger squeezed and re check high speed adjustment.single screw is for idle spped-raises or lowers-if chain turns while at idle back off screw.
On that model the low adjustment may be factory set, and the adjustment screw is replaced with a roll pin. The high adjustment has a cover on it that can be prised free revealing the screw beneath. Turn screw all the way in (clockwise) GENTLY dont overtighten only to when you feel slight resistance on the screw. then back out 1 1/2 turns. This is the base setting. Turn at 1/8th turn either way until good high speed rev is obtained, but no further in than 1 1/4 turns out, or you will run the saw lean and cause damage. Check and replace your plug if fouled at all.
