Question about Sony Handycam CCD-TRV67 Camcorder

Sony camcorder trv67 wont play tape or record

Sony camcorder trv67 will not record or play showing error code c31.41Sony Camcorder TRV67 showing same error code and it won't play. When a tape is inserted and the tape door is closed, the tape compartment won't go down into place without applying pressure. Eventually when I can get the compartment down in place, when I press "play" the error code C31:41 comes up blinking.

Checking the latch door does makes sense, but how and what can I do to "tighten" the door if needed?

  • slhalvey Mar 05, 2009

I am VERY comfortable with taking apart a couple of things, but need to know what I'm looking for in the latch mechanism.

  • slhalvey Mar 05, 2009

Would this "bushing" also prevent the tape from "seating" all the way down as to where it should? I ask this because one time I was able to put pressure on the top of the compartment, then press play, and it worked.

  • slhalvey Mar 05, 2009

Still looking for additional advise before I pay to get it fixed

  • slhalvey Mar 05, 2009

I don't believe that it is moisture. The camera is always kept in a bag in a dry place and has never been used in the damp weather. The manual stated that moisture would have a different error code flashing

  • slhalvey Mar 05, 2009

Already tried that. Ejecting tape and removing power source several times did not resolve the issue

  • slhalvey Mar 05, 2009

Once again, I already tried the removing battery/power source several times Didn't work

  • slhalvey Mar 05, 2009

Yes I did hear shaking and "slapping". Was so aggravated last night already tried that.

  • slhalvey Mar 05, 2009

Will use that as Plan "B".

  • slhalvey Mar 05, 2009

would that be the same as the bushing?

  • slhalvey Mar 05, 2009

yes mechanism loads properly without the tape. Only once the tapes gets put in that it won't go down automatically without pressure. Once the pressure is applied I can get it to load tape and go down into place, but then it will not play, receiving the error code

  • slhalvey Mar 05, 2009

Tape is NOT jammed. Tried several different tapes in and out.

  • slhalvey Mar 05, 2009

I know that the error code does not exist...but the first part of code"31" indicates that it was a resetting the power issue that could be done yourself. Nope.....not it

  • slhalvey Mar 05, 2009

As I previously said, tried several tapes, so that isn't the problem; also yes it does go down without a tape.

  • slhalvey Mar 05, 2009

I thought that the "Sony" expert was going to send me some tech pics to fix the mechanism. I would appreciate that VERY much.

  • slhalvey Mar 05, 2009

once the cassette is in there and down in place is when the error code comes

  • slhalvey Mar 05, 2009

I'll check into the cost. It may be over five years old, but used very, very seldom. Kids aren't little anymore so might be worth it rather than another investment

  • slhalvey Mar 05, 2009

yet again, another opinion; thanks for checking code book, I'm hoping it's mechanical with the door latch/bearings.

  • slhalvey Mar 05, 2009

Sorry, new to this. I thought the only way you could help was by me reposting.

I do still have the manual at home. (I'm at work).

I appreciate any help you can give. Yes the camera is on the older side, but RARELY used. I'm now trying to copy all my tapes onto DVD of family movies.

    Thanks again

  • slhalvey Mar 05, 2009

still going to try other options before taking in.

  • slhalvey Mar 05, 2009

Dear welcomej.....please forward the additional info that you were willing to. thank you

  • slhalvey Mar 05, 2009

I am reposting since I was promised additional mechanical advise. Thank you

  • slhalvey Mar 05, 2009

tried battery removal...will try additional smacking

  • slhalvey Mar 05, 2009

don't know if drum is rotating. will I see it when tape is in and door closed?

Also, the only way for me to get additional comments is to "repost". If I just "add comment" no NEW replies appear. Thanks

  • slhalvey Mar 05, 2009

whats the estimate cost of motor replacement?

  • slhalvey Mar 05, 2009

would the silver drum be rotating if it was the motor? Thanks for your input

First, get a couple of cans of pressurized air. While you have the tape removed and the door open, spray the mechanism thoroughly trying to remove any dirt or dust. Disconnect the power supply or battery for 10 seconds. Reconnect power supply or fully charged battery and insert tape. Hopefully will work
If that doesn't seem to work, I have read in other articles for this model you can" shake " the camera vigorously and reload the tape and attempt to run the camera. Apparently the shaking has worked, probably dislodging foreign material from the drive mechanism.
Let me know if any of this works, good for future reference.
Good luck, let me know/
Best regards,

Hi, thanks for using FixYa.
I have two solutions for that problem, I found out the first one long time ago in the Sony's website:

  1. Turn off the camcorder.
  2. Remove the battery or disconnect the AC power adapter for 60 seconds.
  3. Insert the battery or reconnect the AC adapter.
  4. Turn on the camcorder.
  5. If the error message appears, service may be required.

If your camcorder still shows the same error code, then you'll have to send in your camcorder for service.

The second solution might sound silly, but it worked great for me and apparentely for a lot of people too, as far as my research in the web:
Try smacking the side of the camera relatively hard with the palm of your hand (Not that hard to break it). Eject the tape and reinsert. You may need to do this a couple of times.

In my case seems like a gear was misaligned, making appear this error.
Good Luck!!!

Instead of going foir new camera .get this repaired as its the error for faulty part in the camera .any how the parts has to be replaced and the camera needs servicing so get it repaired.this error is for mismanagement in internal assebly.take it to the local repair center and get the estimated cost as it will be negligible .instead of going for new.

HI, i have check the code book and it has lead me to believe that this is a motor failure. you will have to replace the entire electrical motor in this device. again, this is electric motor failure.(c31.41)

The motor in this model has two speeds. one for ejection/loading, and one for play and ff/rw etc...

The way a camcorder and vcr's work is all based of timing. The door gears and the wheel motors are all synced together and controlled by a circuit board. If the door was ever forced open or closed where it may have skipped a tooth on the timing gear may have messed up the timing.
Another possibility is that there is an internal error either by control board shorting out or a bad sensor on the door latch. There is a bad communication between the door latch and the control board.

Usually when a big repair is done on any electronic equipment, you can always guess it's going to cost at least 1/4-1/2 of what it would be to get replaced. If the camera is not very old and has treated you well, then it may be worth repairing. I always say if it's older than 5 years, than it's not worth fixing.

Many repair shops will charge $10 to look at it and make an assesment and ballpark repair cost.

the little silver drum with plastic gear is the motor. If the gear doesn't spin, than the motor is shot.

  • Nate Stansfield
    Nate Stansfield Mar 06, 2009

    about $40 for replacement

  • Nate Stansfield
    Nate Stansfield Mar 12, 2009

The silver drum has a seperate motor . There are 3-4 motors in a camcorder. I would think it's the motor or the circuits in the main board. Either way it would be hard to repair unless you are familiar with electronics.
Try playing, reversing, forwarding, without tape.

  • Nate Stansfield
    Nate Stansfield Mar 16, 2009

You will most likely have to have either motor replaced, or an electronical board. It should be taken in to electronics technician to have this repaired. Components will have to be tested to determine exact cause of malfunction.

  • Nate Stansfield
    Nate Stansfield Mar 31, 2009

I think the problem is with the mechanism. When the tape goes in it pushes a pin and lets the mechanism drop down and reads the tape. It sounds like it works without the tape but not when a tape is inserted. If I am accurate then you could look for the pin and manually press it in and out with your finger. i would also do the same with the mechanism. Also look for any broken or missing pieces. I have seen this problem many times with tape players. You can either grease it and work it with your fingers or get it serviced or replaced.

  • Nate Stansfield
    Nate Stansfield Mar 31, 2009

I believe either the spring or bearings to the mechanism is shot. If the tape is forced in mechanism wont set properly, setting off a error code.

    Around here it's about $40

The silver drum is the motor. If it is good is should spin. It will be about $80-120 to repair

Sounds like the device isnt recognising your cassette, it is going to be a sensor which is only going to be replaced via going direct to sony and although they are really thorough they are also very expensive and you should ask about pricing structure before agreeing to even send it to them. sorry i couldnt be more helpful.

Hello, I see that you are having a problem with your camcorder. How does the lid close with no cartridge in it? If it closes correctly try another cartridge. It may have a defect in the one you are inserting. If that doesnt help hold the power sitch down while removing battery. Wait two minutes then reinsert battery .Then when it powers up it should reset . Thank you

Error code C31.41 is a malfunction of the drum mechanism. Either corrosion or worn gearing can cause this.
Try to free it up by hand first - as it may be seized up past the torque of the motor.... then re-try.
If it doesnt spin freely - the drive motor & transmission will need further inspection/replacement.

Sony is pretty secretive about the :23 code. It can't be found anywhere. However, to service the C:31 code, Sony recommends you do the following:

  1. Turn off the camcorder.
  2. Remove the battery or disconnect the AC power adapter for 60 seconds.
  3. Insert the battery or reconnect the AC adapter.
  4. Turn on the camcorder.
  5. If the error message appears, service may be required.

If your camcorder still shows the same error code, then you'll have to send in your camcorder for service.

    to fix it

tap it on the side whilst its on, bang is as much as you can in all sides and it should fix it
it sounds crazy but there's a very tiny pin that needs to go back to its place inside.
and hitting it seems the only fix.

The mechanism got stuck.
Open the cassette compartment screws and apply external DC to the Power input and eject the tape.

Solution for your problem :
Open tape deck, make sure there is not a tape in it.

About midway back there is a black rubber roller in the middle of 2 metal guides.

In the center of this black roller you should see a white plastic tube, this is a bushing to allow the roller to move with out wobbling.

If you do not see this white tube yours has fallen out, so the search for a new one begins. Don't freak out a straw for a can of compressed air will work, or from a can of WD-40 will aswell. Simply push the new straw firmly into the center of the black roller.

If you see the straw take a small flat head screwdriver and press down on the top of the bushing firmly, You can hear a click and problem is fixed .
Note if this does not fix the problem your bushing may be cracked find a pair of needle nose pliers and pull out the old bushing and replace it using the straw from a can of compressed air.

Hope this helps .

Let me know does mechanism load properly without tape?
If yes, then there is some thing obstructing during loading while tape is in.

Important info is about error code C31:41
It is related to video head motor (drum) that is not rotating in your camera and reason can be some thing is stopping it or any circuit problem.
Please put your hand in open tape compartment and try to turn head with finger and check does it spin freely.

C31:41is tape jammed, try extracting the tape and putting it back in place, if this keeps happening that means that the traction mechanism has a problem, in that case the camera must be taken apart to fix the problem.

Yes, I found a solution it is moisture. I found that by blowing a hair dryer into the cassette chamber for 10 - 20 seconds on "hot" followed by a further short period on "cool". The problem went away. There is, of course, a danger thet the heat could damage the circiut board components and ruin the camera for good. I had already decided to throw it away

I cant seem to be able to transfer my recordings to a DVD recorder on my computer The video recorder is a Sony DCR-TRV22E.My computer is PRYON. PRY-i922vp

If the Computer is having Windows Vista installed on it then it's required to use a compatible i.LINK or Firewire cable to connect the Camcorder to the Computer.
Once the connection is established, you can use Windows Movie Maker to transfer videos from the Camcorder to the computer. Make sure that the Camcorder is set to the "VCR/VTR" or "Play/Edit" mode and the tape is playing in the camcorder before importing the videos to the Computer.

If you're having Windows XP on the Computer and using USB cable to connect the Camcorder to the Computer then it's required to install the USB streaming driver and the USB driver for connection on the Computer before you can establish a successful connection between the Computer and the camcorder for transferring videos.

You can install the USB streaming driver using the supplied Software installation disc.

Camera wont play or record has message c:31:23

Basically, the error message indiactes the reels are not turning, either because of a defective tape or a fault in the mechanism. Try a new tape. If the problem persists, you will have to have the camcorder serviced. please be sure to rate this solution. Thanks!

Transfer of video.

If model number is correct i.e CCD-TRV67, means its analog camera and can't not be connected directly ( USB ) with PC. Suggestion is to record movie on DVD by any DVD-Recorder to get analog signal in digital format. Now you can transfer it in PC.
Hope this info will help you and if you find it helpful, give vote as fixya.

Code 32:11 will not eject tape sony tvr67

The mechanism got stuck. Open the cassette compartment screws and apply external DC to the Power input and eject the tape. If this is not possible refer to a skilled technician. If you need the service manuals and mechanism for replacement write to us.
