Question about KitchenAid A-9 Electric Burr Grinder

1 Answer

Cannot get the grinding ring option to turn

I purchased a Vintage Kitchen Aid Coffee grinder and I cannot get the grinding ring, under the glass and rubber seal, to turn. I see there is a little screw behind. Do I need to unscrew this to change the grinding options from fine, medium or course?
Thanks for any help you can give me.

This is a set screw. You need to take this out.
You can access this to either clean the burr
grinding wheel. Maybe this needs changed.
If you google the Kitchenaid A-9 Burr grinder you can get instructions to download on this machine.

I need to know the exact placement of the gasket for the glass hopper----Manual states it should go on the glass but then it is difficult to screw the hopper on to the machine---It makes more sense to...

I had the same problem, as I had a vintage machine, missing the gasket. (Without the gasket, vibration of machine will cause jar to unscrew by itself.) Put the gasket on the glass, but slide it up on the threads so that it only contacts the machine body when jar is fully screwed in. Jar will indeed get (slightly) difficult to screw on as gasket contacts grinder adjustment ring, but that slight tension is normal and necessary in order for the gasket to achieve it's function.

Kitchen aid burr grinder adjustments

You are correct, the grider positions are locked internaly so the grinder will not go too fine since this can damage the blades and also too fine need more power from motor and also can block it by rottating normaly. However you ir open the grider you can overcome the lock and udjust so the grinder can grind more fine coffee. In order to be always at the safe side just move gradualy step by step until you find the perfect grinding and adjust so that will be the minimum plus one mor move for furure adjustment if you need.
Just for reference the corect grinding is for 7 to 7.5 gr of coffee the running time of the coffee from your machine should be 25 sec for 25 cc of coffee aprox.
Good luck.

Parts and Grind Selection

The current Kitchenaid A9 burr grinder glass jar is interchangable with the original Hobart/Kitchenaid A9 glass jar; therefor, the gasket should also interchange - contact Kitchenaid customer service to order a gasket.

Setting the grind is accomplished by grasping the body of the ginder in one hand and the grind-selector ring (collar that the jar screws into) in the other. Hold the base tight and turn the selector ring clockwise for a finer grind, counterclockwise for coarser. Be careful not to completely unscrew the selector ring; if you are not sure how much adjustment is left, screw it all the way clockwise until it stops (finest grind); then, back it off, up to one full turn to make the grind coarser.

The selector ring has the words coarse, medium and fine cast into it; these are rough postition markers. There is a triangle cast into the body of the grinder, just above the brand name, that can be used to diral in a preferred level of grind. I use a medium-coarse grind for drip coffee makers; to do likewise, position the selector ring so that the triangle is pointing midway between the words coarse and medium.

Turn adjustment ring towards fine, until it cannot move, then back towards coarse about 5 numbers, that should give you a good start on the grind.
