    Hi Geekman,

In response to your questions--If I am sitting in a dark room and I shine a flashlight on the laptop screen, I can all of the icons etc. I can even find the cursor and use it. Second question--I can not start the external monitor in normal mode. Strange occurance happened this morning, I had the external monitor connected and for the first time in a few days and instead of external monitor starting, the laptop monitor started working momentarily.Unfortunately, it froze. Then I connected the external monitor and it completed the boot up on that screen without any additional prompting on my part. What do you think?

    Hu again Geekman,

In response to your second question--Using a flahlight as mentioned before, I was able to shutdown my laptop correctly and consequently was able to start external monitor in normal mode. Also, again I was able to see brief imges on my laptop screen before the blackscreen reappeared. Good luck with this one.

    Hi Geekman,

Now, when I conect the external moniter images are on both screens. When I disconnect the external screen my laptop screengoes into blackout mode. What's next?

    Hi again Geekman,

The situation keeps changing. Now, the only way that I can get an image on the external monitor is in safe mo In normal mode, I get a blck screen. If I use a flashlight, I can see icons. Does this mean that it may be the video card? Or is does the lcd monitor need to be replaced? I'm so confused and tired of trying to locate a faint cursor with a flashlight. I must say, however, it's been an interesting experience.

i have replaced lcd and inverter--no improvement--same problem any first started with a black screen. using an external monitor, it will work in safe mode only. occasionally, the external monitor green light blinks and both screens are black. using a flashlight, i can barely see icons through my dirty screen--very fustrating and difficult!!! i'm already into it deeper than i want financially. how much will it cost for tech support and what is probabilty of fixing this one
    let's talk first

When you boot up the laptop normally and the screen is black, can you see a very dim image on the screen?

Can you boot up with an external monitor in the normal windows mode and get a normal image?

As you can see an image on an external monitor, this means your video card is OK.
Dim image and/or dark display on the laptop's LCD screen indicates a faulty LCD backlight and it could be the inverter that supplies high voltage to the CCFL lamp or it is the CCLF lamp is nearly burnt out or burnt out, most likely this is the case.
The inverter can be replaced easily but the CCLF lamp is more time consuming and requires soldering skills.

If you get a clear image on the external monitor, it means that the Video card is OK and the fault is with the backlight. This fault is caused by a faulty inverter or a burnt out CCFL lamp.

Normally when you connect an external monitor or a data projector to the laptop and boot up, the video information automatically switches to the external monitor/data projector. You can then switch between the LCD and external video or a combination of both by pressing the Fn + F5 keys.

It appears your video card is OK and if you can switch between the LCD (even though the screen is black) and the external video output (monitor) and get a clear image on the monitor, it means the video switching circuit is OK.

This means you still have a backlighting problem.

It still could be an inverter problem or a dead CCFL lamp, most likely a dead/faulty CCFL lamp.

You replaced the LCD screen, was it new or 2nd hand and was the inverter new?

Hi there, I have a toshiba satellite M60-BK3 Laptop. Is only four years old and from couple of days my LCD display is going on standby mode very fast. I try pressing and releasing that little switch which...

A couple things to try, 1 is boot the system in the safe mode (F8 menu at boot) and see if the LCD turns off there. You can also attach an external monitor and see if the external looses video too.
If the system looses video in the Safe mode and doesn't loose video with an external monitor, then the LCD backlight is likely failing
LCDs run about $100 to $150 on ebay

Toshiba satellite a215s7422 screen blackout problem, however, computer powers up and fan is running. external monitor will start in safe mode. sometimes i see the word signal on external monitor. help

Sounds like your refresh rate is incorrect

Boot into safe mode. Go to Start > Control Panel > Under Appearance and Personalization , select Adjust screen resolution ,
Selct your laptops display , set the resolution to 1024x768 , click on advanced settings then click the monitor tab at the top.
In the box below , select Use hardware default setting .

Hit ok.

If that doesnt fix it something is wrong with the drivers.

Start in safe mode with networking and get the drivers from here and install them.

Screen stays black on startup of toshiba satellite L300

have you tried either switching between external and internal monitor usally Fn + F5 on toshiba or try plugging a monitor into the back and see if it displays.
if you get a display on the external monitor then its probably a screen or inverter fault if you donot get a display to an external screen then it is likley t be the graphics on the board itself.
hope this helps
