Question about Gateway 310S (2900621) PC Desktop

1 Answer

Disk dirve not being read.

I have two disk dirve in a Gateway Model 310S. It did read both but now wont read either one of them. One is a DVD burner and the other is a DVD drive.

What is there I can do to fix the problem? Is there a wiring diagram to where I can see if them are hooked up right?

A DVD drive was installed. But Im not sure if the drive was new or not. Because before the one was installed it was reading that there was a Local D in the My Computer file. Now there isnt any there. The is just Local C and a Floppy. Under My Computer file.

Either the dvd-drive is not jumpered correctly (there is physical jumpers that tell the drive how to react on the cable) or the device is not getting power from the power supply (there should be a 4 pinned molex going in the rightside of the drive). A good diagram step process for looking into this to emphasise this: http://compreviews.about.com/od/tutorial...

I started the link at step 4 because step 5 shows what a power cable is looks like.

Unfortunately you will have open the computer to view all this. If you have a camera to take a picture of the setup it would be great. You might also have to consider asking the person who installed the drive to assist in opening it.

Most likely the installation of the new drive (was it a new DVD or HDD drive?) was not jumpered correctly. Please note what was installed and what is installed currently in the machine. Manfacturers of the drives will allow a better guide on a proper diagram for installation.

Would there be a reason they would not be hooked up right?

I agree, it's either not jumpered correctly or the IDE cable isn't seated all the way. May have been partially pulled loose from the MoBo when the new drive was installed...

Just bought a new DVD burner, its a LG Super Multi DVD ReWriter 22x (Gh22LS40) I also had to buy a sata to IDE converter for my motherboard that has only IDE connectors on it. I can not get Windows 7 to...

ok here's what you need to do.....

first check your dvd burner if its is detected properly on your cmos. If it is located properly try to re install windows 7 again i've encountered this problem before and i just reinstalled windows 7 and it worked like charm.

If the dvd burner is not detected on cmos try to check the jumper settings for both hard disk and dvd burner one orf the other should not be on the same setting ex. if your disk drive is on master you should set the dvd on slave and vice versa. then redo the first step. hope this helps

Cannot copy files to DVD disks

First of all you should have the recording tab ON. Have you tried burning using Nero instead of dragging and dropping? This may solve the problem.

However, if you prefer to drag and drop, try setting the write speed to a slower setting, even if the dvd burner has faster write capabilities.

1. I do not think it is a hardware issue.

2. You can try replacing the IDE cable, but if you can read the contents of the disk it does not suggest a communication issue between the drive and mobo.

3. I do not think that the burning software is to blame, when you drag and drop you are actually using a windows based burning software that is installed with the operating system.

4. set up your files to burn through nero, let the software do the work.

I had the same issue with my dvd burner, although slightly different error messages, solved it by using nero instead.

What do you mean by not reading the disk?

When inserting a disk to the DVD drive, it runs an autorun program if one exists on the disk. By nature autorun will not run again if the disk stays in the drive. If you want to run the content of the disk, you have to execute autorun.exe from Windows Explorer. Let me know if that doesn't answer your question
