TV Turning off shows 3 blinking leds and got worse over time

The TV started shutting down after 20 minutes about 3 months ago. The problem got worse over time and today the TV will shut down after 3-4 minutes. The lamp goes off first, after 1 or 2 seconds also the audio goes off and the 3 lights in the front of the TV start blinking simultaneously. There was also a very slight grinding noise which
suggested a potential problem with the fans or with the color wheel. Based on these symptoms I succesfully replaced the following parts: fans, lamp and color wheel. After each replacement the symptoms did not change (except that I do not have the grinding noise anymore), the TV will function perfectly for 3-4 minutes and then shut down and show the blinking lights in the front.
This TV set had a very short life (the service menu reports 4100 hours) and I believe that every part that could be replaced within reason with the symptoms described has been already replaced. I checked also the termostat on the lamp and the switch when you open the back panel to replace the lamp. All works well. After so much effort I am ready to give up, what am I missing and is there any hope that I can fix this TV without spending a fortune in more parts?

I changed the ballast as advised. It did not work. I keep getting the 3 blinking lights

  • iloromero Mar 07, 2009

Yes I had checked the wheel, (air bearing not ball bearing) and it was the same as the one I replaced so I did not change any jumper.

  • iloromero Mar 07, 2009

Yes I followed the procedures and diagrams in the links provided. What exactly do you mean by reset procedure? Is it something you do from the service menu of do you mean a hard reset (i.e. leave the TV unplugged from power for several hours)?

  • iloromero Mar 07, 2009

I did a hard reset, I also reset the service lamp hours from the service menu. At first all seems to work fine but then I get the 3 usual blinking lights. The only change after the recent replacement of the ballast is that now the TV turns off after a longer time (10-12 minutes instead of 3-4 minutes but I guess it will get worse over time).

  • iloromero Mar 07, 2009

The fans are the first thing I replaced, both are working fine and I did not set the TV to shut down. So to recap I replaced both fans, then the lamp, then the color wheel, the the ballast and I still get the TV to shut down and give me the 3 blinking lights. The only difference after I replaced the ballast today is that now the TV shuts down after 10-12 minutes instead of 3-4 minutes (but when I started having this problem the TV was shutting down and blinking after 20 minutes and got worse over time).

The shut down is caused by excessive current draw, most likely by a hi voltage circuit board that has a transformer on it, the transformer field windings may be shorted.

I think the fans are not doing enough cooling so the tv overheats and that's why its shutting down. otherwise it could be just as simple as settings, you accidently set it to standby or shutdown after 3 minutes. check the menu.

If you already replace the lamp, and the color wheel, then there must be some stupid problem that keeps the TV on protection mode with 3 blinks.

Test the ballast board, as already suggested, but also check the color wheel assembly, some color wheel has a jumper that must be set in position depending on what chassis is mounting.

Also check the lamp cage door is closing well , many models have a sensor in there.

The ballast board is the small AC high voltage board that powers the lamp, you test it reading the voltages out, carefult that there is AC power in there, do this test only if you are a qualified technician, reading voltages with power on must not be done by home users.
The board also has a resistor that blows.

If it is the board you have no power to lamp and no light.

If you have light check the lamp installation and color wheel assembly.

As usual there are also a couple of weird faults on main board that can give you 3 blinks and it is not lamp, but to test Jungle and protection IC in there you will need the service manual.

Shuts down after 5 minutes blinks green

Once the set shuts down, wait for the unit to stop blinking. Once it stops hold in the input and menu buttons for 5 seconds. The TV will then give you an error code. A 6-1 or a 1-8 error code would indicate a bad Color wheel. Which I think is the problem you have.

LG's are known for having bad capacitors in the power supply. These components will cause all kinds of problems like not turning on, no backlight or no video and are known to do this after the TV has been off for a few hours or days. You will need service on this TV.

How many times per second does the POWER led blink? (dont worry about the OPC).

1x per second (constant, steady blink) = bad inverter/lamps
2x per second = bad power supply
3x per second = bad main board

You can buy the parts online and fix if yourself!!
