Question about Whirlpool 3.2 cu. ft. Plus Washer

1 Answer

The switch that makes it think it's closed is broken.

My washing machine is a top loader. The little button that gets pushed in to make the washing machine thinks it's closed, is not working. For a few weeks, I was able to slam the lid closed and that helped but now, I can't do anything to make it work.

My model number is- LSR 5121JQ0. After I posted this, I tried a few different things to try to make it work and I ended up breaking the part off. Would it be possible to replace this part myself? To have a repair person come and replace it, it would cost almost $200.00. I know the part number already and how much that costs but I am worried about my ability to actually replace the part myself. For the cost of someone coming, I could just replace the machine for not much more than that. I would appreciate your opinion in this. And thank you for the help that you have already been.

You are referring to the lid switch. If it's visible, try tightening the screws that hold it to the cabinet (they may be loose and the lid strike can't engage the switch properly). If you can, feel underneath where the lid switch is located and see if it's broken from where it mounts (feels loose). Push the lid switch lever down, if it doesn't "click" or doesn't start the wash, replace the lid switch and you should be good to go.
If you want, post your model number to make sure it's the model I'm thinking of and I can also try and get you the part number for the lid switch.

The part will not be difficult to replace, all you need to do is remove the cabinet to gain access.
Pull and lift the console toward you by removing the 2 screws (rear of end caps) which hold it down to the
cabinet. Once the console is out of the way you will see 2 brass clips
which hold everything together. Remove these by inserting a screwdriver
from the top and pop them out. Unplug the wiring to the lid switch. Open the lid, grab the inside of the cabinet opening and tilt the whole cabinet forward. It should all come off
as one piece. With the cabinet off, you can see the lid switch wiring running along the inside top right. Should be easy to figure out from there.

Let me know if you have anymore question.
    Good luck!

Buttons work, but the safety feature wont let it run unless I lean on the lid

Don't know if it's a front loader or a top loader. Either way, there is a safety switch in the lid. On a top loader, there is a little button at the back of the lid opening, which the lid pushes as it closes. the lid may be out of line, or warped. Did anybody stand on the lid ? If bent, try to twist the lid straight. You may also try temporarily wedging a folded matchbook cover between the lid and button until you can fix it correctly.

Is the lid lock tang on the lid ok & not broken.
You need to jam the lid lock lever in the lid lock down for it to do a wash.
This is where your lid lock is

I HAVE A TOP LOADER WHIRLPOOL LXR7144EQ1. i HAVE TO PUSH DOWN ON THE LID AFTER CLOSING IT OR HAVE SOMETHING HEAVY ON TOP FOR IT TO CONTINUE TO WASH. WHATS THE PROBLEM?

It sounds like the lid switch, which senses when the lid is closed, needs adjusting. You will need to remove the top of the machine, locate the switch and move it closer to the lid actuator.

Maytag MTW5770 TQ model. 3 years old. You have to drop the lid hard or push on it to get the machine to recognize the lid is 'closed' and can then start the agitation and rest of cycles. It does...

Some of them have a mercury switch that has been bent so it doesn"t make good contact with the liquid mercury. If you can find it you can bend it back. It has to be on the door or an arm under the door or door hinge.
If you know how, you can raise the washer top using a flat knife type of tool to move springs thru the gap between the washer top & the lower front piece. (assuming it's a top loader)
In a front loader it's still near the door.

Tthe washing machine stops working after about 5 minutes of washing sometimes closing the lid a little hard seems to bring it back to the washing cycle. This has happened several times why is it happening?

it may be that the lid switch is going bad. raise the lid and look for a button that gets pressed in when the lid closes. if you can push in on the switch with a small screwdriver or butter knife and the machine runs, then that is your problem. closing the lid had sounds like a switch problem

Model 110.82873120 won't spin on spin cycle

Check to make sure your lid switch is functioning. On your washer, the lid switch is located on the right hand side under the washer casing. As you lift the lid and close it, you should hear the switch clicking. If not, the switch may be broken, it may have come loose and is not making contact with the lid actuator, or the actuator itself may be broken. You can view a drawing of your lid swtich at searspartsdirect.com. Just look under the "Top and Cabinet" heading for item 11. The actuator (item 12) is what actually makes contact with the switch and toggles the push button. Make sure it is intact.

If the switch toggles, a resistance check with the power removed will tell you if the switch is still good. You should get 0 ohms with the push button closed (switch pushed in) and an open with the switch open (switch out). I'm trying to rule out the possibility of a bad timer by having you check the switch and actuator first. This is usually the more common fail item on top loaders experiencing a no spin problem. If you need to access the switch, you will need to remove the exterior case, by performing the steps outlined in the following link:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r385198-replacing_lid_switch

Your configuration may differ slightly from these instructions, but the assembly/disassembly of the washer casing should be the same. If you have any questions, or if your symptoms differ from what I have described here, please let me know so that I may assist you better. I hope this helps you.

Also check the lid to make sure the tab has not broken off that actuates the lid switch, your model may not have a tab on the lid.
