Check in the freezer compartment behind the removeable panel. it looks like a thick piece of aluminium wire and is attached to the evaporator. There is also a thermodisc which controls the defrost cycle.

Refrigerator and freezer get cold but freezer does not freeze whirlpool 1997 model et22dkxfn00

Can you remove the rear panel in the back of your freezer and tell me what the frost pattern looks like? When a refrigerator loses Freon the frost pattern looks like this photo HERE If the rear wall of your freezer looks like this you still are having a defrost problem photo HERE
Here is what that will look like behind the rear panel of the freezer should the defrost heater and defrost thermostat need replaced HERE
You mentioned that you have already replaced the defrost timer so we should not be concerned about that. The defrost heater=> 2315530 Defrost Heater

The defrost thermostat=> 4387503 Defrost Thermostat

I will be here should you have questions or comments, Thanks Sea Breeze

Freezer coils are frozen up and the evaportation fan is working. Where is the defrost heater and what does it look like?

http://www.repairclinic.com/PartDetail/Defrost-Heater-Assembly/67001794/1022690 is what one looks like (since you didn't give your model number - couldn't look up the one you need)

http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/part-model/GE-Parts/Refrigerator-Parts/Model-GTL21KBXABS/0432/0166000/G0904088/00002 It is item 58 on the diagram, but again not your exact schematic. The defrost heater is normally located very close to the coils.

But if you test your defrost heater and it is good (see video on first link on how to test) then you might have trouble with the thermistat - http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/part-model/GE-Parts/Refrigerator-Parts/Model-GTL21KBXABS/0432/0166000/G0904088/00002 or the timer - http://www.repairclinic.com/PartDetail/Defrost-Timer/482493/3348 and some whirlpools even have a defrost control board - http://www.repairclinic.com/PartDetail/Defrost-Control-Board/W10353224/1860724

Hope this helps!

My ice maker, Whirlpool model ED5THAXMS00 is not making ice. The red light flashes twice

Hi,

Take off the back panel in the freezer. 1/4" screws. Use a nut driver or ratchet and socket with an extension.
2. Behind the frost is the evaporator and the defrost heaters. One heater in the middle and one at the bottom. They are glass tubes. If you can see the bottom heater that is great. If not use a hair dryer and defrost only the very bottom to expose the lower heater only.
3. Now in the refrigerator section at the top where the controls are, take off the long plastic piece to expose the timer. The timer should be on the right hand side and have a little circle that is slotted. Get a flat screwdriver and turn that timer slowly clockwise just until it clicks and the refrigerator turns off. This will put it into defrost.
4. Now look at that heater that you exposed and see if it glows and gets hot. If it does, then the timer is bad.
5. If the heater doesn't come on then go ahead and defrost the rest of the evaporator with the hair dryer. This will take a little while. Don't poke at the evaporator!!!
6. Once totally defrosted look at both heaters. They should look like clear glass and see a silver coil running through them. If they look discolored at all then the heaters are bad. The heaters come as a complete assembly with the defrost thermostat which clips onto the evaporator.
7. If the heaters look okay the only way to know for sure if they are bad is to check continuity with a meter on the plug at the end of their wiring harness. If you can check that then you can splice in a new defrost thermostat to solve the problem. However the best thing to do is replace the heaters and defrost thermostat . It is easy to install.
Follow these steps and this will solve your problem.

you will need to access the heater in the rear area of the freezer compartment and disconnect the heater element and take a continuity test of the element,if this checks good, then in the same area is your defrost timer, unplug the heater from it and hook up a voltmeter and energize the defrost timer manually and see if you have a voltage there

My refrigerator is not blowing any air.

Sound like the beginning of a defrost problem. Look into the back of your freezer and see if there is a layer of frost building up on the rear wall. If yes you will need to unplug and remove the rear panel and defrost the evaporator with a hair dryer. After cleared of ice look over the defrost heater to see if burned out or if your defrost thermostat appears to bulge. Also send me the model number of your Whirlpool so I can see if it has a defrost timer or an Adaptive Defrost Control. That would be the most likely reason for the warming of the fresh food section unless the damper is shut to that side preventing air to circulate freely, Thanks, Sea Breeze

NOT COOLING

Most likely your defrost system has failed. Most times it's in the control area of the system and that part will depend on the model number. The control part would most likely be the defrost timer or Adaptive defrost control board most times you find the timer or ADC inside the fresh food section and behind the controls for the temperature. And sometimes it's the defrost heater and defrost thermostat located behind the rear panel in the back of your freezer. Fact is you may be able to open the freezer door and look at that back wall and see frost clinging to the rear wall. If yes the unplug remove the rear panel in freezer and defrost with a hair dryer and lets look over the defrost heater and defrost element or use a OHM meter to test the parts. Sometimes you will see the heater burned out. Get me your model number most times on the front of the refrigerator and down near floor and behind the fresh food section door. Let me know what you find, Sea Breeze

Water leaking into refrigerator. Looks like it is coming from the two holes in top of refrig box to freezer. Whirlpool model ET1CHMXKB03.

There is a small heater to evaporate the water after a defrost cycle. This defrost heater is gone and needs to be replaced.
