Question about Dell Inspiron 1000 Notebook

New Board; Fan turns on; No Screen; Cap, Scroll, Num lights flash

I installed a new motherboard for a Dell Inpiron 1000 laptop. I made sure to get the chip off the old board and reinstalled everything. Before it won't even turn on. I mean nothing was happening. Now the computer does turn on (you can hear the fan and see the lights) but the screen doesn't. The hard drive light comes on, but the Caps, Scroll and Num lock lights all blink in sync. The computer then shuts down after about 15-30 seconds. Does anyone know whats going on here? I've taken the thing apart several times to check all the connections and still nothing.

It seems I have another problem all together. The Dell I'm working on locks up everytime i try to reinstall windows. It stalls out usually in the 7% to 13% range of the install. Not quite sure what is causing this especially because it a brand new hard drive to which I'm installing windows. Any idea's what is causing this to happen?

Try a different CDROM, and check to see that the install cd is not dirty or scratched.

It certainly does indicate motherboard issue, sub out the ram memory one at a time and test, if no change! the laptop needs to be checked out for motherboard problems.

Press power button nothing comes up on screen, however, the num lock icon lights up and flashes, the caps lock icon also lights up. Dell Vostro 1510.

Copy and paste this link into your internet browser for the service manual for your laptop.
http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/vos1510/en/SM/html/trouble.htm#wp1092170
The star icon (*) means flashing LED, the bold circle means on, the circle within a circle means off.
The LED's that they are referring to are the NUM, CAPS and SCROLL.
It appears that you have a problem with your LCD. Try connecting an external monitor to your laptop. If you get a display then your LCD display panel needs to be replaced. If no display then your motherboard needs to be replaced.

Installed new motherboard for Dell Inspiron 1000- blank screen

The F5 and F8 functions are normally used by Windows to shoose between C:\, Safe Mode and normal boot.

Setup is a function of the BIOS manufacturer and it could be any key but is normally F1 or F2 as the screen says in your case.

I don't know what your specific problem is but it is a new board and sometimes they don't survive the installation due to improper handling.
The almost universal use of CMOS technology makes some of the chips very sensitive to static discharge even with countermeasures in place to protect them.
