Re: the orginal compass was deleted.
Tom Tom changed the software (one of the upgrades you get through Tom Tom HOME) to remove most of the compass functions but the manual still refers to setting it up so it appears as a menu item when you first operate the unit but then subsequently disappears if you update the unit software as it did on mine.
It is talked about in some of the Satnav forums but there don't appear to be any solutions.

Have you tried resetting the nuvi 610? There is a reset button under the antenna, press it and hook it back up to the power source. this should work. See page 4 of the manual for photo and if this does not work you can try clearing the unit also on page 4.. Also have you updated you Garmin at the Garmin web site? There is usually software updates that will help it recognize the new satellites. I have attached a link to the owners manual below. http://www8.garmin.com/manuals/1262_OwnersManual.pdf
Calibrate the compass (Main menu --> Setup --> Calibration --> Compass), follow the instructions on the screen. Also, see page 50 of the manual. Calibration must be done outside - stay clear of any large metallic object (e.g. car).
My Tom Tom XL was doing the same. After several minutes it would revert to a demo and you would have to tap the screen to make it disappear, but would come back a few minutes later. I spoke with Tomtom Customer service, and the guy on the phone told me i have to plug it into the computer, go into the tomtom from My Computer, and delete a folder names Scripts. After deleting the folder, it's now working perfectly.
This should fix your problem :)
if you need any help you can email me: firstname.lastname@example.org and i can talk you through.
http://www.tramsoft.ch/downloads/garmin/streetpilot-c550_owners-manual.pdf page 29 & page 30 discuss the 2 options for reset/restore.. one clears all saved data (i.e. favorites) & the other resets the system. I'd also suggest connecting the usb cord to ur pc & GPS , then use the update software, This can resolve any issues you may be experiencing.
I think that you are probable running two diferent versions of the GPSmap 60CSx's firmware. Go to Garmin ( http://www.garmin.com/garmin/cms/site/de/service/geraetesoftware/ ) and download the WEB Updater software for free, then you just plug your unit into the PC and let the updater software check the firmware version, then if its out of date the program offers to update it for you. It honestly couldnt be easier.
