My mower starts but dies as soon as I release the key

I would suspect the ignition starter switch is defective, it is located at the back of the ignition key lock cylinder.

remove THE COVER THAT HOUSE THE PULL CORD pully. TURN THE WHEEL IN THE direction THAT IT GOES WHEN cord is pulled ( THIS TIGHTENS THE RETURN SPRING) hold this wheel tight..every turm it could spin back rapidly. turn wheel 6 complete turns. align the hole in the housing with the cord hole in the pully wheel. thread cord through both tie a double knot . slowly release now install cover. try it if too loose pull out to max , hold pully, remove knot , cord and turn 2 or 3 more turns, replace cord, double knots , slowly release. replace cover, crank it and cut that grass.

STARTING ROPE BROKE AND UNABLE TO START MOWER

Hi,,,,replaceing the rope is easy, just takes sometime. first, take the cover off the engine. turn the cover over and rope pully should be right there. Measure out 8 foot of new rope. burn both ends of rope so it don't fray. get all of the old rope off the pully. here is where an extra pair of hands come in handy. by hand rotate the rope pulley 6 revolutions, now have someone hold the pulley, then feed rope thru the cover and thru the pulley rope opening, then tie a knot in that end, now slowly release the rope and it will wind itself onto pulley, now put rope thru the handle and tie knot, now put back togeather and go mow your lawn,,,lol

I have a 1994 G4000 craftsman riding lawn mower i got it running but when i let off the pedel the engine shuts off the switch for the brake/clutch is fine and i replaced the selonoid and key start also the...

If electrical ( the motor shuts down like you turned the key off) its likely the rider presence switch ( seat switch).
If the motor is pulled down and dies as if its uncapable of handling the load check the drive system. Remove deck and check drive belt and pulleys. Pull the belt off of a pulley for slack and with the tranny in first and the brake released you should be able to turn the large pulley on top of the tranny easily which should cause the tractor to start to move. If you cant turn the pully there is something wrong in the tranny.

Lawnmower rope pull start, has rewound back into housing and locked? How can I get it to release so that I can reconnect it to the lawnmower handle?

You will have to take the top off.It has 3 bolts on the sides of the motor.Pull top off, hopefull you just have pull rope out to fix.The rope on the pully has a spring in the bottom of the pully.Do not pull out pully, you will have a hard time gettig it back in.
