Seagate 250Gb external USB hard data read/write error

Hi. I have a Seagate 250Gb external USB hard drive. The USB drive is recognized, but it makes a strange noise when plugged in. I am nevertheless able to see the files/folders on the USB drive. I am however not able to view or copy any data from the USB. Any tips on how i can get it to work again or recover the data without paying an extortionate fee? It worked for a couple of months and has alot of data on i would like to recover even if the unit is only suitable for scrap.

Thanks, Naveen

Well, in your case I think you can try some so-called data recovery software. It's pretty much cheaper then data recovery services.

First of ALL - Connect your external hard drive to your personal computer. And install this software Wondershare Data Recovery on the computer in order to perform data recovery. Get the program from its site.
data recovery (for Windows OS)
Mac data recovery (for Mac OS X)

Good luck. I hope that my reply has shed some light on the problem! Remember - Always make Backups of your precious data!

How to recove Seagate external hard drive data?

Probably, the new operating system cannot recognize your Seagate external hard drive. You can connect the Seagate external hard drive to another computer to copy data to another device. If the problem still exists, you might need to perform data recovery. You can free download the data recovery software: http://www.icare-recovery.com/seagate-recovery/seagate-external-cannot-be-recognized.html

Seagate external hard drive problem

I have the same problem with a 500GB HD by the same maker. Fortunately mine started throwing "delayed write failed" errors regarding the MFT. I had enough time to save my data. Your event log should say something to point you in the right direction. Make sure your pc is up to date with the latest service pack too and start looking for a new External HD. Tiger Direct has great deals. I got a 1TB for about $120 Good Luck!

Hard Drive Dropped

Turn off your computer and then plug in the FreeAgent external drive. Then try turning your computer on, it should read.  If it doesn't I would go to the Seagate website for troubleshooting.

Lost Data-Please Help

Make sure you have both USB connectors of the Seagate Y cable plugged into the computer (yes - two USB ports are used up)
It's possible that the drive is not fully powered and stuff on it doesnt show up. You need to use two from your computer to give the drive enough juice.
