what is the make and model of laptop, does it see a wireless network at all? is wireless turned on, on your laptop? most have a button to turn on or off. Also some wireless routers come with the wireless capabilities turned off out of box for security now. Make sure the router wireless connectivity is enabled.

I just need some more info and I can help you solve this.

Ok so off we go, first thing is since you reinstalled the OS, computer probably lost the driver files for the wireless device in you Dell Dimension. So you will have to find out the manufacturer of the wireless device and reinstall those drivers if you have not done so.

To verify this you need to go to the Device Manager and look for any hardware in the computer that is not installed properly (will have a symbol by it) defining there is a problem with the device, or not recognized by the computer.

Once the device manager comes back ok (everything operating normally) then you need to go to network connections. Look to see if you have a wireless connection there? If you do, then you need to connect to the wireless access point (router) So View available wireless connections. then connect to it.

There is the possibility that your friend set up the router connection with a wep kep (encryption) If so then you might just need to reset the router to factory defaults to remove this. (resetting the router to factory defaults is different depending on your router model) You will have to look this info up in the manual. Once the encryption is off it will become an open access point and you should be able to connect to it ok.

I know this was a lot of information in a short time, if you have questions please feel free to let us know.

Also if anyone else has a better (or easier) way for David to accomplish all of this please ring in.

I need to connect a D-Link router to my cable modem so that I can use my laptop anywhere in my home

Cable-modem <-- Ethernet cable --> WAN (or "Internet") port on the router

LAN port on router <-- Ethernet cable --> network-port on your laptop

Then, access the "built-in" web-server on the router,
and run the "Wireless Networking Setup" wizard:
* to set an SSID ("network-name")
* an encryption-level (Hint: choose 'wpa')
* a password for your wireless network

Then, disconnect the Ethernet cable from your computer,
and then "wireless available wireless networks".
Select your newly-created network, and connect to it.

I just installed the internet at home from mediacom and i needed to plug my d-link router to have a wireless network at home and i dont have the configuration disk for my router and i dont know how to make...

You NEVER need that CD-ROM disk. :-)

Use an Ethernet cable to connect from a LAN port on the router to the network-port on your computer.

Click Start.
Click Run.
Type CMD
Press Enter.
Press Enter.
Look for output similar to:
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . :
Start Internet Explorer.
Type (or whatever value that you saw).
Login to the router (ID: admin, password: [blank]).
Click to run the "Wireless Networking Setup Wizard".
Enter an SSID.
Choose an encryption-level (use: 'WPA').
Choose a password for your wireless network.
Save the changes.

Disconnect the Ethernet cable, and click "View Available Wireless Networks". Connect to the SSID that you chose, and enter the password.

I have a Belkin router and i don't know hoe to cennect my laptop to my main broadband at home ,what do i do with the yelow cable do i connect the router to my laptop ? I have no clue and it;s really...

Here's how to connect the router.

From your broadban modem, connect the ethernet cable to the Internet/WAN port of the router. Then using another ethernet cable, connect your laptop to port 1 on the back of the router. Now run the setup CD that came with your router. After setting it up, it will tell you to disconnect the ethernet cable from your laptop to try the wireless function. Good Luck!

Experiencing disconnections

There could be other devices that run the same wireless frequency as your wireless network. You may want to change the channel on your wireless router or if you have an option to change other wireless devices at home such as cordless phone then you may do so. You may want to place the router away from those devices and put it in the middle of your wilreless computers to get better signal.

Wireless connection set up

Are you trying to hook up the laptop wirelessly to the pc? because then the pc would need to have a wireless card as well....sounds like I need more info, but if you are trying to do what I think you are, you should just get a wireless router instead, hook the pc tower directly to it via ethernet cable, and then setup the laptop to connect to the router. The router would hook to your dsl or cable router....what service do you have?

Hi,I just want to disconnect Ethernet and run with Wireless I have a Billion Myguard 7202G router which worked fine with Ethernet and has worked wirelessly beforebut shifted and cant remember how to set it...

Open the web browser and type in the browser’s
address box. this number is the default IP address for this router.

A username and password window will appear. username and pass should be admin.
If you change the password and dont remember it. Look for a restart button on the back of the router. This will reset it back to default.
When you manage to login look for WAN and WEP setings

Wireless only works in room where router is

Get a extender at radioshack or local computer store. If your walls of your affice are concrete I would recommened that you more your wireless router out of that room and run a longer ethernet cable to help the signal out.

Notebook won't connect to network

1) Verify if Wi-Fi WLAN interface of your notebook is OK.
1a) Check whether HW switch is ON and the wireless system service is running.
1b) Switch on the WLAN Access Point (router) SSID broadcasting.
1c) Scan WLAN networks by the notebook. Can you see your home WLAN? If not, there is HW or SW problem in your wireless adapter probably. If WLAN is visible, continue by next steps.

2) Remove all WLAN security on both sides (AP and notebook): Authentication = none/open, encrytption = none.
3) Activate DHCP server in the router and set the dynamic IP assigning on WLAN notebook interface.
4) Select your home WLAN SSID in the list and try to connect.
5) Wait and check status. Is WLAN connected? Does obtain the notebook an IP address?
6) In success case set the WLAN security.
