i just refilled and have the same problem

Have the same problem. I refilled the cartridge and I know that it is full yet the ink level still shows that it is 0% and will not let me print in black.

  • luxetveritas Apr 23, 2009

The Lexmark company states that these are nonrefillable cartridges. This the 3rd Lexmark printer that we've owned. Doesn't the ink level just reset when you select "new cartridge" when you reinsert the old cartridge?

  • luxetveritas Apr 23, 2009

The solution is complicated - the explanation can be seen at www.fixyourownprinter.com and involves an intricate spyware/chip system that doesn't allow cartridges to be refilled and used on the printer. Therefore, if you've purchased this printer you're condemned to buying new ink cartridges. The person who claims to have found this spyware system has given his explanation on this website.

I refill the ink cartridge in my lexmark x4650 and reinstall. Then follow the prompt on the printer which calls for running an alignment page but the next message is that the cartridge is very low on ink and I need to order a new cartridge. Any way to reset this thing

SOURCE: I refilled Lexmark ink cartridges 36 black and 37

36 and 37 can be refilled, but they won't work. They are "return program cartridges" as Lexmark calls them. That actually means that they CAN NOT be refilled. You need to buy 36A or 36XLA and 37A or 37XLA. Those are refillable.
Here is link to Lexmark's site, with a compatibility list.

Refilled black cartridge 36 on my 5650 won't work

The cartridge is electronically dead. This is a common occurrence from improper refilling. To be correctly refilled it must be done under a vacuum to prevent air from entering the print head, which has likely happened. As ink flows through the print head it acts as coolant in an engine, when air is introduced the print head cannot cool, over heats, and ruins the cartridge. These cartridges are difficult enough for us professionals to refill successfully, my recommendation is to leave it to us, or buy original. A refilled integrated print head cartridge will always continue to read as empty because there is no way to reset the cartridge, the manufactures do this on purpose. Lexmark cartridges in general are designed to only last one cycle anyways, multiple refills is attained only with proper technique.

I've refilled my black ink cartridge #36 and put it into my Lexmark 5650. My computer will not let me print - not even to "complete a page" print. It says that I need more ink. I have windows vistas. What...

Lexmark 36 and 37 cartridges cannot be refilled. When your ink levels drop below a certain point your printer deactivates the electronics on your cartridge so you cannot refill them. I own a Cartridge World ink refilling shop and I sell Lexmark originals for the 36 and 37 because of this reason. Unfortunately you purchased a machine that you have to buy expensive original ink for. You need to buy Lexmark original 36 and 37 to get your printer to work. As a refiller I never recommend someone buy a Lexmark printer if they ever want to use refills.

I own a Cartridge World ink refilling store and I can't refill the Lexmark 36 and 37 cartridges. Your printer deactivates the electronics on this cartridge when the ink levels get low. Your printer needs a black and a color cartridge with functioning electronics to print. I NEVER recommend Lexmark printers. They are poorly made, don't accept refills easily, and have the most expensive ink across manufacturers and it is designed to clog your cartridge unless you use it quickly. If you keep this machine you are stuck buying Lexmark brand ink (the return program cartridges are a little cheaper though).

Trying to reload color cartridge.

Many brand name printer cartridges have a code that tells the printer they are a new cartridge. Once the cartridge is empty it will never again tell the printer that is it new.

You can refill the cartridge but it will continue to tell the printer that it is empty.

You say you "had my ... cartridges refilled today" so I suggest you go back to the folks who refilled them and ask them for suggestions.

Otherwise, purchase off-brand cartridges that won't tell the printer they're empty and keep refilling them as needed.

Another approach: purchase a new printer that won't give you this problem. I refill my Lexmark cartridges without any problems.

Refilling cartridges

For that printer: there are 4 color and 4 black cartridges BESIDES the #31 photo cartridge. Lexmark has made it so you MUST either, throw away or send to them, the 36 and 37, the 36XL and 37XL. The printer will never again recognize them after they are removed from the printer...
However, the 36XLA and 37XLA AND the 36A and 37A as well as the 31 Photo may be removed from the printer, refilled, and reinstalled.

I have seen some forums that say you can but a piece of BLACK tape, across the bottom row of contacts on the non-refillable cartridges....I believe there are 4 to 7 contacts across the bottom row only.....and the printer will still give you a message that it needs ink.....but it WILL print. I have not tested this theory yet though. I have just gotten the first message saying my black ink is very low.

Hope this helps and I think Lexmark Corporation Sucks for tricking people like this. (This printer comes with the NON refillable cartridges as default, but I did NOT see in the documentation that it couldn't be refilled. Nasty people........:(

Good Luck~~! mstipps@yahoo.com

I cannot get my printer to recognize my refilled ink cartridges

“Lexmark does not support the refilling of its ink cartridges. Refilling the ink cartridges can cause them to leak, thus clogging or even damaging the print head. Any damage to your printer caused by refilled ink cartridges may not be covered under warranty”. Please use genuine Lexmark cartridges for best results.

Reset Lexmark 36 Black cartridge?

I managed to get it working, just damage the connection point (where the chip is). I used a knife to break part of the connection and now I can fill the cartridges myself for a fraction of the price :)
