Question about Oster 76076-010 Hair Trimmer

Oster 76 overheating

I recently replaced the carbon brushes on my Oster 76, as I have done many times before. This time, after turning the clipper back on, it worked but it had a high-pitched whine and I noticed that it ran more slowly and little to no air was blowing out of the side vents. After just a couple of minutes, the clipper was almost too hot to handle.

The most likely cause of the condition you describe is that the motor is trying to run with too little current reaching it. ( Note: Voltage is the pressure pushing the electricity down the wires. Current is the amount of electricity being pushed. An easy analogy would be gallons-per-minute of flow through a garden hose. That flow is the current that is being delivered. )
If there is a built-up coating of black residue/gunk on the commutator ( the part the brushes ride against inside ), you're probably not getting the full amount of current flow needed to run the motor. Any motor will run slow, overheat, and eventually burn out if operated on current flow that is less than that required by the unit. Too small a cord, too long an extension, dirty contacts, any of these things can restrict current flow.
Pull the brushes out and look down inside. If the armature is covered in black residue, the only fix is to clean, polish, and undercut the armature, or simply replace it.
These are well-built machines, and designed to be servicable. That said, I must caution you not to attempt this repair/replacement if you have no experience in this area. It's all too easy to end up with a unit that doesn't work at all. Even worse, a unit that goes POOF and generates a cloud of acrid smoke !
Time to turn to your local repairman. It isn't a difficult or especially time-consuming job, and should be quite affordable.

70ca16d.jpg Hope this helps, this is a tongue guide, you hopefully recognise it on your blade. If they are not paralell, then adjust them with pliers, both need to be perfectly vertical. When you put it on the clippers push the latch in as you close the hinge.
If it still wobbles then the next fe wthings need checking
1. The hinge screws on the clipper are tight, located either side of the hinge on the clipper.
2. The drive lever may be worn, thats the maroon peice of plastic sticking up at the top of the clippers, it moves from side to side when clippers are running.
3. If all seems fine up to now, your clipper should be fixed under warranty as it will involve changing parts covered by the warranty.

The brushes may be the problem as they do wear over time. You can check them by unscrewing the plastic cap on either side of the unit. Remove them and inspect them. I have included an enlarged picture below of what they should look like. If the carbon part on yours look much more worn down than the picture, you may need to replace them.
You will find replacements at See link below

Run but will not cut

Are you sure you have Andis A5 or did you mean Oster A5 Clipper, if this clipper is A5 Clipper, You need to check the Lever for wear, The front of the Lever show wear on both side, Like white color and is not squad this Lever is worn. Need to replace. This Lever moves the blade side to side fully. if the Lever is worn the blade will not move fully side to side and the cutter blade the smaller blade will stay in the middle with hardly no travel to side to side and will not cut the hair even if you purchase new blades. Also I would like to mention if the Oster Locking Hinge is worn out and don't have the require tension to hold the blade in place the blade will not cut. How do you test the Oster Hinge on a Oster A5 Clipper,
(1) first close the hinge, in close potion with your finger nail try to open the Hinge, if the hinge slightly open or opens loose the Hinge is worn. if the Hinge is good it will not open or move and your nail may just brake your nail.
Many of my customers run into this type of problem, and the problem can be solve easily by checking these parts first.
One more item I would mention here if replace the A5 Hinge make sure you get the A5 Hinge not the Oster 76 Hinge they are driferrent, The A5 Hinge has on the back two wire's sticking out that fit on the Oster Latch for the A5 Hinge, the Oster 76 Hinge would not have these wire's on the back. I recommend replacing the Latch when you replace the Hinge. I hope this helps any body that have a A5 Oster clipper or A Oster 76 Clipper.

Broken carbon brush inside of Classic 76

Turn the clipper on its side and gently tap the cassing you could be lucky and it will fall out, otherwise you will need to remove the end cap and the motor frame assembly then you will be able to push it back through from the inside.

Oster 76 clippers turn off while cutting

The two so called buttons are not buttons. They are the screw caps that hold the carbon brushes in place. You will have to replace them. You can buy a new set a your local Sally's beauty supply store.
Be careful that you put them in the correct way. MAKE SURE YOU UNPLUG THE CORD BEFORE STARTING!

Where do you put the two little springs, and what do they do? My blades have started to rattle on clipper. Oster turbo clippers.

The springs probably go with the carbon brushes, to hold them in. To find the brushes, use a dime to unscrew the two circles on the side of the clippers.

The rattling could be from loose screws on the blade hinge. My turbo clippers did the same thing. The blades rattle if the screws are even slightly loose.
