Thanx 4 ya reply mr fuzz but, as stated this is the 3rd microwave where there has been similar symptoms! The current microwave in question is brand new (omit 6 mnths storage) . It's properly vented, if anything a couple of inches away from socket??

I have used it since and nothing has happened so far..... but it is worrying :(

Should also mention that with the first microwave all was fine for a bit then a sudden loud pop/bang and a massive puff of dark smoke came out from under the microwave!! With the second one the plastic runner thingy caught fire!, form the centre!!! huh!?!

Did you properly orient the exhaust vent and take out any shipping materials under the exhaust vent? Sounds like the exhaust fan itself may be overheating, smoking up the innards of the microwave and then the smoke is escaping though the hole where the carousel is located.

Either that or someone built the shaft of the carousel rotator out of the wrong material and the microwave is actually trying to cook (or arc) that piece, causing a fire.

Neat stuff!

Clouds of smoke started coming from the inside of it and we had to put it outside the smoke was coming out of the holes on the inside

It is time to replace the microwave oven, the problem you are describing is one or more issues, the high voltage transformer, high voltage capacitor, the magnetron, and the high voltage diode all play a key roll in generating the high voltage which translates into heating the food. The cost in my view will run high and would be put to better use buying a new microwave oven.

Microwave stopped working with no warning. They had a recall on this model and since they ordered two parts it has not worked right

Just had my Kitchen Aid Microwave KHMS155LSS burn up and bellow smoke.

Thankfully, I was close by, stopped the microwave, vented the smoke, turned off the circuit breaker and unplugged it. Still the smell of burned motor, burned plastic has me concerned. Did it get hot enough to cause problems behind the drywall? So far, I am keeping a "fire watch" to make sure nothing is smoldering.

I have a ratteling noise from the motor that spins the fan next to the overhead light inside the microwave. when i disconnect the motor the noise goes away. How important is this little fan?

That "little fan" is the Microwave "Stirrer" without it the magnetron will burn out real quick. Due to the microwave being reflected back. That "Fan" scrambles up the MW, and scatters it in the chamber.

After cleaning, the microwave worked but

I am still working on the problem. So far the exhaust fan, the light , the clock and light inside the heating chamber has started working. I am going to sit back and think and look for the part that shorted out. Since the unit is 29 years old the bad part may not even be available. I will keep you advised after I find the culprit part. The information may be beneficial to others. Thanks

Cycle stops and won't run until the clock is reset

The magnetron cooling fan blade is either slipping on the motor shaft or has spun and fallen completely off the shaft. It can be reattached to the shaft as it just slides on. Several well placed drops of 5 minute two-part epoxy from Home Depot or Lowe's dripped into the hole in the fan blade before you slide it back on will insure that it doesn't come off again

Did I blow it up????

After washing you need to poke holes in potatoe skins or the steam can cause them to explode. Cook potatoes no longer than 6 to 8 minutes depending on your units power.

Microwave ovens can be very dangerous if damaged, so you will be safer to replace the unit. Better safe than sorry. Service on microwave ovens is not cost effective, and the newer ovens are very reasonable.

Microwave oven

Most microwave oven problems can be repaired, but you'll need to take it to a reputable microwave service shop to get it diag**sed properly and find out how much it will cost to repair. A major problem with the magnetron or other high-voltage parts could cost as much as 85% of a new one to fix. It may be worth it, however, if the oven is in good condition, with ** holes or corrosion in the cooking chamber and if you like the features.

Re-trade or go buy a new one this unit is not worth repairing. Go buy a new one their cheap nowadays. And for God sakes unplug it, keep fire extinguisher handy and tell the kids not to use it. You could have an electrical short in there.
